Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft finally makes a compelling Windows Phone ad, makes fun of Samsung and Apple rivalry

Actually saw it on TV today, so its not just an online thing. Pretty funny. And for all the people saying that only two people are using it in the commercial like its a bad thing, you fail to realize the point of the ad. Its saying everyone has one of those two types of phones so if you wanna be different and get out of the stupid war than go with a windows phone.

For better or worse people buy new phones often just to impress their friends, that is hard to do when everyone has the same phone.

But my phone has AbbathTheGrim's blood and spunk on it. That makes it unique, right?

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

Funny as hell. But compelling?

Compelling is: this phone has all these amazing things it can do that no other phone can do. Fact is all smartphones do pretty much exactly the same things as far as 95% of phone users are concerned. So there's really nothing compelling about any phone. It's all about taste and preference, which means it's all about marketing.

So it's actually Jimmy Wales' blood and spunk? How did you get this stuff.

WHERE IS MY KORORINPA 3

I think what many of you are missing is the problem with Windows phones are getting brand recognition in a market saturated with Samsung and Apple. The phones themselves are excellent, For many they are superior to either of the competitions offerings but the average consumer doesn't know they exist. The commercial to me looks aimed at making something memorable that makes consumers aware next time they are shopping that their are alternatives. It isn't about features, it is about awareness which is what they lack the most at the moment even though they took a sizable chunk out of android/IOS market this quarter they need a little more before they can fight on features alone.

"Don't fight (it). Switch" -> I get this. It's simple.
"Don't fight. Switch" -> This I am not convinced with.

So what's the logic here? To avoid the fighting, I should switch to the third, unpopular choice, where I'll be the odd man out? And, if enough people switch with me, won't the fighting just follow me? The "don't fight slogan" doesn't work unless Windows Phone stays niche.

Good analysis. What some people who claim it doesn't point out any actual advantages of the advertised product don't quite seem to realize is that it actually does. It just doesn't point out any actual hardware/software features or advantages, but something more subliminal/psychological.

The ad hints at the stereotypes you'll be confronted with when buying a phone from the two leading smartphone manufacturers. And many people, especially teenagers and people in the twenties are indeed heavily influenced by how others will perceive their choice for a particular smartphone brand/model/OS, what stereotypes they'll be confronted with etc. A significant number of people are willing to pick a more expensive smartphone with less features just to feel individualistic etc., to not be like anyone else.

Seen that way, the ad actually does point out an actual advantage of buying a Windows Phone - currently, you will indeed be standing out. If you buy an iPhone nowadays, few people you meet will be excited to try it out, because they've already seen many iPhones. Same when buying a Samsung Galaxy. But if you own a phone like the Samsung ATIV, people will still be very interested in trying out that bizarre looking OS they've never seen before.

The irony of course being that the more successful the commercial is, the less true its message becomes.

dont like it. to violent

Don't fight, switch? Worst slogan ever. Why would you switch from 2 brilliant platforms with hundreds of thousands of apps to one with very little. You can't even get Instagram on windows phone!

Android is a mess IMO, had it, hated it.

AppleOS is great, but I got bored of the hardware.

Windows 8 is rock solid, smooth as butter, and on my Nokia 920, an absolute joy.

now...  What's experience is your opinion based on? and just how many of those hundreds of thousands of apps have you even looked at, nevermind downloaded?

Windows currently has 50,000 apps and is growing faster than either android or apple did.  Is a bogus argument that thankfully won't exist for much longer. But by then you'll have thought of some other weak excuse to justify why not Windows, when really it's simply because you don't like MS.

PS Instagram will follow all the major apps and be on windows soon, meanwhile there are plenty of 3rd part apps that help with it.

i know this wasnt aimed at me, but im itching to answer, I team lead in a phone shop windows is an easy to use operating system, its one i recomend for first time users, but in terms of what it can do, its still really far behind anriod and ios, the one thing i do like about the windows phone is the free music you can download each month, and it also recognises your music choice and recomends similar bands,

i would also like to point out the whole app count thing is a load of rubbish, if you type in calculator on the google play store, you can get thousands of them, when you only need one, so number of apps isnt really relevant its got "most of the important ones" but there are a few more important popular apps it needs

long story short lol i think the windows phone is ok, but its not at the point where it can be poking fun at other phones in adverts

I like how it shows the smart phone fan war. And only a Nokia could be in the ad, they are the only ones who seem to bother with WP8. Good ad for a good phone

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

LOL I have zero interest in a Windows phone but this is pretty damn funny. Windows 8 is killing me.
