PS4 will be around twice as powerful as the XBox 720. PS4 will be 3 or 4 times more powerful than the Wii U. 8th generation repeating the 7th generation in terms of specifications but PS4 should be able to blow the XBox 720 and Wii U out of the water in regards to consoles sales.

It's actually a great deal closer to be repeating the 6th gen in terms of power with the Wii U being the PS2 equivalent, the 720 being the GameCube equivalent and the PS4 being the Xbox equivalent. The difference between the Wii U and the PS4 is a little larger but the difference between the 720 and PS4 is about right. And yes, the most important part of the Wii U - the GPU - is a complete mystery. The metal has been customised so much that the GPU line that it's based on is completely unrecognisable. We really don't have much of a clue. All we know for certain is that it's designed specifically to be a 720p machine, it has compute functionality, it has a DX11 equivalent feature set and that it has crazy texture compression. And that's it. There's around a third of the silicone that's completely unrecognisable.

Like you said, we don't know how close the Wii U is to the ps4 or Nextbox. For all we know the Nextbox will be even more powerful then the ps4. What we do know is that developers are already having problems porting current gen games over to the Wii U. It has a cpu that is actually weaker then current gen consoles and the memory is also 40% slower then that of the ps3/ 360 in raw numbers, let alone the ps4.

On paper the differences seem huge compared to the ps4, but guess we will know at E3 :)

I think we can take the rumoured specs of the 720 being correct. We're talking about an Xbox/GameCube situation with the PS4/720 respectively.

As for Expresso, the only thing that it's 'weak' at doing is floating point work. But that's what the GPU is there for. We're going back to a more traditional generation in terms of architecture, the 7th gen was a bit of an oddball.

The problems that developers have had with porting PS3 and 360 games to the Wii U are twofold. Firstly, the architecture is completely different. Secondly, developers have only had final tools and SDKs since November last year.

I dunno man but the GPU of the Wii U isn't that great either. It's said to be a R770 we see in last gen cards like the AMD 4xxx series. It might be enough to compensate for the slow ram and cpu compared to the 360, which basically has a XT1900 card, but there is only so much engineers can do with those components when going head to head with the something like the ps4 specs.

Anyway, all we can do is wait for E3 and see how next gen games like: Watch Dogs, BF4 compare to the high-end pc/ ps4 versions and off course the 360/ ps3 versions. Somehow I got a feeling they will all look pretty horrid on current gen consoles, especially if you look at recent games like Bioshock Infinite on ps3/360 VS the PC version. Just don't say all the developers suck when the Wii U version looks on par with current gen ;)

We've already seen from Most Wanted that the Wii U is a noticeable step up from the previous gen consoles, and like I've said previously there's a great deal we don't have a clue about with the GPU. If you have a look at the die shot you'll notice that its origins are completely unrecognisable.

It's not a noticable step up dude, even when Criterion (known for awesome porting) put in the work. This is what IGN said in their review...

Criterion's touted that they’ve been able to bring to the PC version’s enhanced textures to the Wii U, (thanks to the available 1GB of RAM compared to the 512MB available to Xbox 360 and PS3). The truth is I was hard-pressed to notice the difference from the existing console versions. It looks great, but isn’t a noticeable step up.

As I said a billion times, we might not have a clue about the GPU but developers definitely know everything there is to know about it, else it would be pretty damn hard for them to make Wii U games. Sure they will learn to optimize it better due time, but they know what they are working with. It's slightly better then current gen, but not good enough to run next-gen engines the way companies like Epic have in mind for being the standard for the next 7 years.

That reviewer really should have gone to Specsavers mate. You can immediately see the difference:

That's not too far off being night and day, the IGN reviewer was either blind as a bat, had a bad memory or had some sort of agenda going on. That's most definitely a noticable difference, and that's just with screenshots during the day. Driving at night is a major difference. Superior textures, superior lighting and a superior framerate.

People really need to stop thinking that the Wii U is only on par with last gen consoles. What little we know of the hardware points toward the Wii U being 3 or 4 times more powerful than the 360. It's partly Nintendo's fault for waiting until November to give developers final dev kits and tools and partly down to the software we've seen so far being rushed to make the launch and launch window periods.

I could see a marketshare split of

PS4-40%(80m)

Wii U-25%(50m)

Xbox-35%(70m)

There's no way to predict exactly, but you're probably close to what it will be in %'s. Price, games and support will be key in the end.

Lol so goopy you're using a video game review which is subjective may I add to judge the WiiUs power? You clearly know so much lol./sarcasm.

I've edited my post with screenshots to show how ridiculous that reviewer's opinion is lol.

Sub 720P and only 30FPS with slightly better lighting and higher res textures? Wake up, that's terrible for a "next" gen console.

720P and 30FPS for a game that doesn't even look that good....and the comparisons you did looks different when in motion.

Night and day? Prolly not.

Also the Wii U will do good on games that aren't CPU intensive because of the GPGPU which I admit is more powerful than current gen consoles, but very underpowered overall. Seriously, Nintendo's CPU is using 2001 tech. Seriously, what the fuck Nintendo?

I could never justify spending $300 for 2001 tech and graphics on-par with cheapter alternatives with larger libraries.

Night and day my ass.

It's only sub-720p because it was easier for them to do the port that way. And you can definitely see the difference when in motion, particularly the night stuff. Play the game on the PS3 or 360 and then play it on the Wii U. It's noticeably superior. You really can't tell much from a YouTube video, you need to see the difference on a telly to really appreciate it.

As for 2001 tech, that's nonsense. The GPU is 2011 tech and we have no idea about the CPU, just that it's from the PowerPC 7xx line. It's the same line that Gekko and Broadway are from but it isn't 3 Broadways duct-taped together. And it should be noted that Broadway outperforms Xenon at general processing tasks due to the Out Of Order Execution and much shorter pipeline. Expresso also has those advantages over Xenon but with 3 times as many cores and a higher clockspeed.
