The PS3 may even reach 100 million console systems and continue the tradition of PS1/PS2 all sell over 100 million console systems. PS3 may eventually sell more systems than the Wii and win this console sales generation. PS3 is closing down the sales gap on the Wii down to 24 million and is now roughly equal to the XBox 360 in total sales.

It will not. It would take another 4-to-5 year of the PS3 selling at current levels for it to hit 100 million, so unless the PS4 doesn't sell all that well and people opt to keep buying the PS3 instead I doubt the PS3 will make 95 million. Because once the PS3 came on the market it took that long for the PS2 to sell 10 million units.

At current levels, the PS3 is selling 13M per year despite having no price drop in years. So, at current levels, it will take 2 years to hit 100M.

And get your facts right. The PS2 sold about 50M after the PS3 hit the market including 13.7M in 2007.

At current levels the ps3 is sub 10M a year and this number will get smaller as wii u becomes more popular and the ps4/nextbox release. ps2 sold the equivalent of 36% the install base after the ps3 released. I don't think the much less popular ps3 will get close to that. 100 million is the top it could get.

No, it's not sub 10M. The PS3 + PS2 sold 15.6M last year, afterall so I question where you got your numbers from. And you're also forgetting that the PS3 is priced higher than what the Wii cost at launch. But it's funny seeing Nintendo fanboys denying what is happening - that the PS3 is moving on to be the winner of this gen.

by the way, what's the relevance of that? especially when the ps3's best year in sales doesn't even compare to wii's medium year (2010).

Of what relevance price is? Is that a serious question. And that hasn't stopped the PS3 from currently being only 23 or so million behind the LTD Wii numbers. At the rate at which the PS3 is going 2 years at most and the PS3 will top the Wii. And again, imagine that damage that a $149 PS3 or even a  $199 PS3 will do to the Wii's slim lead.

even if wii stopped selling tomorrow the chances are ps3 won't top it in it's lifetime. i predict 8M ps3 sales in 2013 (january to december), then 6M, 4M and 2M the following years. it's a range from 90 to 95 million lifetime sales.

You think Ps3 will only sell 6.6mil more in another 9 months(using 360 shipments that Ps3 would easily match) or 5.81m more according to VGC? Wowzers... That would mean less than 3.5mil in Christmas.... That's insanely unlikely.

theres just no way PS3 wont pass the wii! how could it not? wii is finished, whilst PS3 is still cruising! its still $250, the price wii launched at and we know sony will keep ps3 on the market for 10 years ATLEAST, maybe even longer, which gives it until 2016 to reach the wii. now taking all this into consideration, how could anyone think the PS3 wont pass the wii? its pretty easy to predict if your judgement isnt clouded.

PS4 will wear the crown next gen, you can talk all the crap you want, i'll come back to this thread in a couple years time and laugh at every single person that claimed otherwise.

@Tachikoma

Hate to tell you this but, the strongest console never won a generation.

The PS4 with overtake the WiiUs total sales within a year, despite the PS4 being released a year after the WiiU. PS4 at an affordable launch price of $399 will blow the competition away.

The limited news on the NextBox has been very disappointing. Microsoft are arrogant to believe that consumers will happily cop it sweet and accept no second hand games and the NextBox must be connnected online all the time to use the NextBox. Not buying a NextBox is sending Microsoft the message consumers will not put up with their arrogance. Sony has my purchase next generation with the PS4.

thats not a rule though. thats just how its played out so far and honestly if ps3 gets to 100mil which is very possible a couple mil difference isnt really a big deal. a while ago 360fans were saying even if the ps3 sells more the gap wont be significant and"it will be a statistical tie"

@Max

It doesn't matter if the PS3 gets to 100mil 7th generation is over with the Wii winning and the PS3 in last.

So like, I'm tired of people posting this irrelevant piece of information. Seriously, it doesn't matter how much power your console has, it's not like people go, 'Oh look, the PS4 is more powerful than the Nextbox, I don't like powerful consoles. So I won't buy it." Seriously?  SNES won the fourth generation, it was the most powerful, you know why? Because it was the most appealing and had the best selection.

PS1 Won because of the game selection over the N64, that and N64 games were more expensive at the time, despite the N64 being $100 cheaper than the PS1. Do you honestly think the N64 lost because it was more powerful?

PS2 won because of the game selection.

Wii will win this gen because of gimmicks. Seriously, the only reason most people bought a Wii was for the gimmick. My little sister did, my aunt did, my cousin did, and so forth. Like they literally bought like two games for it and now it collects dust. The Wii won this gen off a gimmick, nothing more, and nothing less. Anyone who disagrees is lieing to themselves. If the Wii 1st party games were as strong as Nintendo fanboys make it out to be then the Gamecube, N64, AND Wii U would at least be competitive to other consoles in the next gen.

I'm calling it now. The Wii U will come in last, and it won't even be close. Anyhow. The Wii won this gen off a gimmick, if it weren't for said gimmick than the 360 and PS3 would both outsell it, and the PS3 when it's all said and done may STILL outsell the Wii. The fact that the PS3 and Xbox360 are identical in power makes this a moot point. But a console being more powerful than another doesn't effect it's sales, at all.

If a console can be more powerful than the competitors, and be priced correctly, and had the 1st party and 3rd party support then it'd win for sure. Which is why I think the PS4 will win next gen.

I'm not going to make any predictions because I'll end up being wrong - but I want all the companies to succeed because competition inspires innovation. Here's hoping for a 3 way tie at 100 mil

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.
