Forums - Sony - Death of PSP games sales (Other charts we 26 Jan 2008)

This is not intended as a flame bait thread please treat it as such

Ok, according to this weeks Other charts only 18,494 units of software were sold on the PSP.

Now this is 2.78 consoles sold for every game purchased this week (51,502)

even more alarmingly though, this is only one unit of software per 595.81 PSP's sold in the Others region altogether.

I know this is just 1 week in 1 region and so is not exactly a demonstrative sample but if you account for seasonal variations sales have been dropping for some time. Can PSP software really have sunk so low?

Now having said this its been a couple of years since I bought a PSP game (I think loco roco was the last one) so I cant talk.

I am curious, is this the lowest attach rate of any main stream console ever? Are these figures accurate?

I just find it difficult to believe that just about every PSP bought is purchased by people with no real attention of getting any genuine software.

Also if it really is this bad why is retail begining to drop the system?

PS. Just out of interest who here owns a PSP and when was the last time you purchased a game for it?

Yea I'm sure everyone agrees PSP software sales are abysmal but they always have UMD sales to fall back on.

/ducks and hides!

We did have 2 PSPs in the house:

I bought 0 games then sold it.

My son had GTA and SOCOM then sold it.

130 million expected to be sold this year!!

At the Entertainment Media Expo in Hollywood, Sony executives touted the success of their UMD format. The company said it has already sold 9 million games on UMD and 8.2 million movies. Sony is currently producing 200,000 UMDs a day and future capacity is expected to be 500,000 per day. Sony expects videos to account for more than 60 percent of all UMD sales in the a few years, with an expected 130 million UMDs being sold in 2008.

Personally, I don't believe they are accurate.

Going back to last weeks figures, 54,000 PSPs were sold and only 25,000 games. Every other console sold more games then hardware. Not only that, at the time I commented below the figures, FIFA08 was on the charts for PSP at 11,000. That's nearly half of the total. Even a couple of other games lower down at 3 or 4 thousand and it's already reached that 25,000 figure. But this is onlt guess work.

Like you, though, I'm not one to talk, I've owned a PSP since launch and own 4 games, because I rarely am on the move, I jsut play on my home console mostly and only play on my PSP when traveling or away from home.

Hmm, pie.

LOL
The thing is that the sales are not just terrible they are, as far as I am aware, the worst in the industries history.
Is the other functionality of the system really enough to maintain the consoles life.
Any other time sales drop this low it means the system has died a death

I think the last psp game i bought was Final fantasy tactics. I live in the U.S., but when i go to my local ebgames, or gamestop and look at the psp section there is rarely anything there that i really really want to buy. The other day my friend asked me what games i could recomend to him for his psp. I was only able to recomend like 5 of them, all of which he already had.

I have PSP but buy games slowly. I only play games when travelling so a game like R&C on PSP lasts me months before I think of buying another one.

Last game I bought was Silent Hill Origins. I have about 10 games. I also watch movies, listen to music and use Internet Radio function.

Given PSP HW sales I can only assume that Sony have discovered an interesting demographic who want to buy this kind of HW - equally obviously no-one has worked out how to sell games for it.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

What I'm about to say may end up sounding like trolling, but I do not intend it that way:

I think they should actually halt making PSP games, and focus on its' abilities as a portable movie player, music player, internet browser, etc. It's clear that, in general, games on PSP are not doing well. This is the only time attach rates have EVER been in terms of systems per game, instead of games per system. It's also pretty clear that the only reason they've been able to sell as many systems as they have is because of the multimedia functionality. Nintendo is the only one who knows how to do well with a handheld 'game' system.

Sony really should market PSP to compete with the iPod instead of the DS. They could do really well, I think.

Your right that did sound like trolling.
I also think you might be right about moving away from software to other functionality. However is the PSP strong enough anymore to stand up against the new ipods or next gen mobiles?

Off topic but I wonder how NSMB would sell on the PSP

I think they could sell games but they should have more simple, fun games that don't feel like PS2 games. For example if you buy FIFA for PS2 (or PS3) are you really going to buy it for PSP?

Another option (actually I've just thought of this and I think this would be great) would be to have PS3 games ship with a PSP version (rather like they're planning with BR). So I get R&C for PS3 and included is a mini-adventure I can download to my PSP. Same with games like FIFA - the PSP version ships with the PS3 version.

Then get fun games out there that suit the audience. Also the BR movie link and better music videos, etc. would be great too.

I def think PSP is not seen or used by many as a gaming handheld. If they ditched UMD, got rid of drive and put touch screen on instead it would be a great mobile entertainment device - particularly with the TV out and Internet Radio.

@Reasonable: Your post lives up to your name But I don't think that will happen, mainly because what would be the benefit for Sony if they are essentially giving those small games away for free?

@Icon: Sorry, I coulda worded that better But yes, I think the PSP could at least do better against iPod than it is against the DS.
