Can Sony & Nintendo compete?

It won't happen 10 5.88%

They will do well against it 45 26.47%

Sony, but not Nintendo 42 24.71%

Nintendo, but not Sony 16 9.41%

No they can't 37 21.76%

It'll still depend on software 15 8.82%

Sony will have one too 5 2.94%

Total:170

This doesn't apply outside the US. It certainly won't help MS take Japan away from Sony/Nintendo.

I really don't know the answer form a general people perspective,

However from a personal view, I don't believe in game consoles becoming media boxes lol. I can already skype, play dvds, bluray ets with my bluray player and smart tv. I dont need MORE devices that do this shit. Sadly game devices had to adopt to cater to these people who want the same service on another device in home.

yeah that's kinda why I made this is because I don't count myself as the typical "mass consumer" so just wondering what sort of effect people think it would have on a major scale.

Actually the main reason which I forgot to mention is this, I want my gaming console to last. LIek my NES, SNES and N64 etc.. If i am using it for 10functions instead of ONE (i.e. gaming) the life of the device significantly diminishes. Not to mention the tech used already is way more complex, so great natural chance of failure.

I think to some extent it does work that way. Sony and Microsoft make competing products and Nintendo makes something cheaper and different. In the mind of consumers (not including us who buy multiple systems) they think do I want Nintendo or do I want Microsoft or Sony. That's the first decision that is made. Even if 70% choose Sony or Microsoft Nintendo still has a 30% share and Sony and Microsoft end up wiht 35% each.

In terms of cable.  Typically cable is more like 50 to 100 a month for hd cable programming at least here in Canada. There is a major trend of people cancelling cable and just streaming what they want. If anything a cable deal benefits the cable company more than Microsoft. The other factor is that cable users are in conracts already so there is a delayed effect before many people could even consider an upgrade to a nextbox. Cable would help microsoft but not by as much as one might think.  If they are the only ones to have a cable box deal i say it doesn't effect Nintendo much but it hurts Sony like bluray hurt Microsoft. Nintendo is a different thought process. It's not an either or thing. If people want a Nintendo system no matter what other technology they have they will purchase it. It's cheap enough and they are buying it for Nintendo games.

I was refering to your comment that smart phone sales compared to regular cell phone sales some how compares to this. MS/Sony arent smart phones and Nintendo arent regular phones. its a silly comparison and you cant draw too many conclusions from it.

You misunderstand the idea of the cable box. MS is not going to be a cable provider. You will still pay for regular cable service. Most companies in additon to that charge 10-20 per box per month for HD cable boxes or DVR cable boxes(or make you purchase your own box at a one time fee). If I can use the next box in place of that i wll either save that money per month, or the noxt box will be subsidized by it and be cheaper and i will pay the same fee i am paying. so it may make it cheaper than the wii u. we will not know until they anounce the pricing and functions.

The same can be said for all three sytems. but they compete for the same consumers. they always have and always will.

Sorry for misunderstanding you!

Put it this way.. Way more people have a Nintendo and a Sony or Microsoft than there are people who have Sony and Microsoft.   It would be like a single person buying a Ford and a GM car..  Not going to happen.. But people would buy a Ford or GM car and Bike.  That makes sense.

Cable plays not a significant role in Germany. I don't see it being a significant advantage. Tbh I know not one person in my life who has cable. Everybody has free Satellite or Antenna. I am sure there are many people who would like Fifa and Football coming out of the same Box but I don't see that feature having huge mainstream appeal here. Cable is not exactly wide spread compared to the US. I am refering to pay TV. Free Cable can be just plugged into the TV.

Sony didn't buy Gaikai only for games. I think they will have something to compete in this with MS.

To me this feels like Microsoft trying to create an all in one box that can do everything that the electronic devices most people have can. Such as Skype, Cable, Gaming, and so forth. The problem with this one these features just seems to me like they're going to be tacked on. Just like, adding random features to the next Xbox other devices can do in order that people will find it appealing. They're not looking for what works as a game console, they're looking for what works in other devices and tacking it in the next Xbox and putting gaming aside.

What the fuck Microsoft, do you not realize people buy Xbox 360's to play GAMES!? And not stream Netflix? Fuck, more people stream Netflix on PS3 than Xbox, shouldn't that tell Microsoft something? Like, it's getting ridiculous in my opinion and mad annoying. Stop trying to make an all-in-one box, you will fail. Because I for one won't buy it if it doesn't have games I want to play.

thats one way. but i dont see them doing it that way. I currently have verizon fios and they have a partnership with xbox and you can access some cable channels already, and they are live channels just like on TV not on demand. I dont currently have to hook up a cable box to do this. just the xbox 360 download the app and put in your subscription info. So although the rumurs have said you would need both i think its more likely they replace your cable box with the next box.

Thing is, they would have to partner with several cable companies, maybe most of them, in order to make it a viable solution for replacing your cable box. Otherwise, they are leaving out a large portion of the country (without even getting into an "always online" discussion). I don't have Verizon FiOS, Comcast, or HBO, and my ISP doesn't support ESPN3, so I can't use any of those media apps.

If rumors are to be believed, it has an "HDMI IN" which would allow the Xbox to be used as a pass-through for the cable box which would allow you to use the tv tuner function. But agian, if you don't have a cable box, that feature is useless and if your provider hasn't partnered with MS, you just might be out of luck for live TV

Of course they can. Nintendo has added the full range of apps and DVR control, and Sony has the most experience in this area with PlayTV and Torne as well as the apps. I hope Microsoft didn't waste too much time on this when they could have been making games. With so much going streaming, doing things this way almost seems like a step backwards. Maybe it is just America.

I already have a cable box....a LOT of people who want cable already have a cable box. Unless it somehow comes with free cable, it's not really something Sony or Nintendo will need to counter. At best it a neat extra feature for people who already have cable and already on it.

There is almost no competitive advantage to partner with a cable company.

In fact there is no way that they can partner with cable company everywhere in the world, and most people who are susceptible to by a next-gen console, already have a cable subscription.
