They already confirmed the PS4 can play used games http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/21/sony-ps4-can-play-used-games/

From what has been understood developers/publishers have the choice whether to block them or not.  However Sony has not talked much about it yet.

Don't developers have that option this gen as well though? Why is this such a big deal going into next-gen? No one is stupid enough to block second-hand sales. Worst case scenario is we get more games with online passes with an increase in the price of them.....

No.  This generation developers/publishers has to do things such as online passes.  Now that "if" MSFT/Sony give them the hardware that they have the choice then they could do other things like make you put a code in, or always-online, or wateever else they decide to do.

And no one is dumb enough to do that?  Maybe you are forgetting about Valve with steam and pretty much every PC game.  Last time I've heard they are very successful along with Activision-Blizzard when it comes to games such as Diablo or World of Warcraft.

If developers can already lock out the multiplayer with an online pass, what's stopping them from doing it to the whole game?
There's nothing holding them back but pure common sense. Maybe major retailers like Gamestop would threaten to not carry the game at all.

Online passes doesn't work the same.  Online passes are for you to either play multiplayer (which is online required) or to lock you out of certain areas of the world.  ONline passes does not block used games and is not always online.

Online passes block out an entire section of the game. If the developers wanted to, they could lock out everything.

This wouldn't exactly block used games, but it would make used games unplayable unless you activate your game. It doesn't have to be always online, a simple 1-time activations is all that would be needed.

I don't think it works like that. Not entirely sure how online passes work.  You would have to talk to someone who knows a little more about that than I do, but I don't think they can lock you out of the entire game because they are offline.  As far as I'm aware online passes has all had some kind of link to online play whether it be coop or competitive multiplayer.  Even those places that you can't get to, you have to be online to get to.  I could be wrong about that but I do believe it has always had something to do with online.

Not the first time Ive heard the "up to developers" rumor.

If true it makes things very interesting. Which publishers will have the stones to try and go always online drm first. My money is on EA and if they do I fully expect a complete crash in their sales

The console community wants the option of pre owned games this is clear

100% Agree!!!

But remember Sony said the same thing for the Ps4.

Pre-owned games block on PS4 is "a publisher decision"

GameSpot asked Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida in a quickfire Q&A not if PS4 would block used games but whether second hand games will require an activation code on the console.

His answer: “It's a publisher decision. We are not talking about it. Sorry.”

Quote:
Update: Speaking at a roundtable session with the press attended by Ars Technica, Shuhei Yoshida stated that "when you purchase the disc-based games for PS4, that should work on any hardware." When asked whether games would require online registration, Yoshida noted that that decision was up to the publisher. When asked if Sony, as a publisher, would require games to be registered online, Yoshida said, "we are not talking about that plan."

They answered the question about no used games by saying "when you purchase the disc=based games for PS4, that should work on any hardware". There's your answer.

As for games being required to be registered online, its a ridiculous question. Obviously publishers already have the option on PS3/360 games but don't do it for obvious reasons. They won't do it next-gen either.

hahahahaha!!!!

Why so defensive?

Are you mad?

chill out dude is only video games!!!!!lol

a player can set up the console to automatically capture a recording when certain in-game events occur, like a headshot or collecting a specific achievement...

isn't this will make every player have same video...??

No they cant. they can only block online stuff. They cant block offline content as there is no way to do it. Currently at least. that can change in the next gen if they put hardware in that allows some sort of offline control, or if they require you to be online.

My sources say wait till May 21st.

It's just that simple.

Yes they can. They can require a one-time activation in order for you to start playing the game. Don't PC games already do this?

Companies will try to require a one-time activation fee, even for single player mode on used games.
This is akin to the on-line pass frm last generation.

Who would do this? Who has annual games that people buy? Who is losing money? Who has ditched companies that would not allow this bilk-the-consumer, ignore right of first sale doctrine feature?

The impact will be lower trade in values and sale prices for used games, which will eventually cause fewer games to be bought since there is less disposal value for the older games.

The end result is a short term gain but potentially a long term pain for publishers.
