I think both the PS2 and Wii play an important role in this market. I predicted the Wii would perform much better than the GameCube performed at a time when everyone spelled its doom, the same for the PS2 if you believed many posters the platform would have been totally dead right now.

I don't think many younger kids will own more than 1 platform at a time and this is the market segment where the PS2 and Wii really thrives, I don't expect their parents to run out and buy them a 360 anytime soon. Also IMO a console aimed at kids should be very sturdy and not die or scratch disc if you don't take excellent care.

the average age of Wii owners is 29! that is much higher than average age of ps360 owner

wii is not a 'kiddie' console nor is it 'aimed at kids'...it is aimed at adults and people of all ages

ps360 are aimed at teenagers that still think 'mature' means blood and guts and sex and violence

A few grandparents may drag up the average age, but the Wii is certainly most popular amongst younger kids.

Personally I love movie like acting and deep story telling combined with amazing music quality, I do think a game like Gears of War appeals more to many teenagers, but for example Uncharted is more like a Indiana Jones movie kind of game.

Cartoon like games like we see mostly on the Wii appeals to all ages, but the PS3 mostly appeals and sells to adults, according to US research 70% of PS3 owners own a HDTV and has the largest penetration of high def audio setups as well. I think it's unlikely to assume kids have a HDTV and kickass audio setup in their bedrooms.

I mean if you have a kid aged 8 and one grandparent aged 80, the average age would be 44 years old, but that doesn't mean the Wii is most popular amongst people in their 40s.

a) any data to backup that it is 'certainly most popular amongst younger kids'?  my belief is it's mainly 20s/30s/40s

b) 67% of wii owners have an hdtv...that's only 3% less than your blu-ray system...so if u use that logic for ps3 not being owned by teens, then how can u say that it's kids getting wii?

You do realize you're doing the "NINTENDO R 4 KIDDIEZ!@!!!LOL" thing, right? And that's a tired, obnoxious old argument that ate itself years ago? Teenagers tend to be the ones more concerned with appearing cool, and they're the ones who end up buying games for big explosions.

I am not LOL-ing at all, I am trying to be objective. What console would you buy for youngher kids? Aren't kids allowed to have a console of preference?

I love SMW and Mario64 myself as well, but to what age group do you think Mario, Pikachu, NintendoDogs, Kirby, etc appeal to the most?

-also, "deep storytelling" in games is laughable. You just implied that Indiana Jones had deep storytelling...

The stories were well thought out and scripted, good entertainment value. Of course it wasn't a documentary style movie.

8-17 olds

"The Wii was on 32% of wish lists, the Sony PlayStation 3 on 19% and Microsoft Xbox 360 on 17%."

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2007-11-19-wii-shopping_N.htm

"As for game systems, Nintendo Wii was the most popular among kids ages 8-13, as well as all girls up to age 17, while Sony PlayStation 3 came out on top for boys ages 14-17."

Why does everyone here assume kids nowadays play a minor role within the gaming industry? Didn't you play video games as a kid?

That about fits with the overall rate they're selling at, if not less so - the Wii is currently selling more than twice as many units as either of its competitors...  Therefore, it means that they have a roughly proportional segment of that population.

And I think the "a few grandparents drag up the age" is invalid.  How many grandpas & grandmas do you really think own a Wii?  It would take more than a scattered couple thousand to make a significant impact - and even a couple hundred thousand would only bring up the total by a year or two.

I think all you showed there was that teenage boys think the PS3 is cool.

I think Mario and Kirby appeall to all ages, and if Pokemon and NintenDogs (learn the names of the games you're having an opinion on...), appeal primarily to children, then Metroid and Zelda appeal primarily to adults.  And stop and look at the third party games that have been succesful - Guitar Hero III, RE4: Wii and Red Steel, and, even by your standards for what appeals to adults, you have to admit that it doesn't support your theory.

For that Nielsen report it was 65% for the Wii versus 71% for the PS3, but:

"The criteria was simple: participants had to be at least 18 years old, own a major game console and play at least one hour per week."

so u got data to backup that it is popular amongst kids, not that it's mostly kids that want the wii...there is a difference

So what you are saying is people are buying the Wii because the PS3 is too expensive?

Listen it might be hard for you to undersatnd, but the Wii sells of its own merits. It has nothing to do with the other consoles. To me The Wii is a "and" console as in Wii "and PS3, whilst the the HD consoles are "or" as in PS3 or 360. (ofcours you get people who buy both HD consoles, but i personally don't see the point)
