Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo not holding traditional E3 press conference this year?

I know Nintendo has said before that they're not competing with Microsoft and Sony, but this is taking it too far. This is a huge mistake on Nintendo's part and it will end up biting them in the ass.

Well, it seems that Nintendo's decision to skip E3 already gave it more coverage in gaming press than E3 conference itself... ))))

Nintendo Directs are not helping....at all. They need to go big with the press conferences.

They are helping. The January ND for Wii U showing Monolith Soft's X did a great job of generating much needed excitement. This past 3DS one did the same for that system with games like Yoshi's Island, Link to the Past 2, and Bravely Default.

They are helping Nintendo core but not much else which isnt very much. If you can show me at  Direct conference with over 400,000 hits on Youtube it would be appreciated.

A Nintendo Direct attracts 1 million viewers. The record, in October at least (probably continued to grow even), is for the Animal Crossing Direct with over 1.1m viewers. These things are wildly successful. YouTube is not the main distribution channel.

I've seen nintendos page, and 1 million+ was probably the best they've done. Sony's PS4 compilation video had over 28 million views at the highest. Nintendo is in the low six figures. Sonys numbers over the last 5 releases on Youtube have done 500,000k or better. Even Microsoft's Halo 4 video on Youtube did double Nintendos best. The internet is where you impress the core, the casuals can be impressed with commercials and if its not working with them you know what you need to do. Lets hope Iwata doesn't screw Nintendo up even more than he already has.

My god, you're really just cerry picking about the DLC... What about everything else? Sure, there was some wishful thinking in there (SSB4 namely), but as a whole that is a much better conference than the actual one Nintendo had. And there has been studies about DLC's indicating that the sooner a DLC comes more people will get it. If it comes out like s few weeks after the games release a lot less are gonna get it...

I'm actually not comparing companies; you can compare e3 to going to the movies to watching a film at home, or going to a concert to simply playing an album at home.... It's just not the same. You don't get to share it with anyone

Considering how bad E3 2012 was, it wouldn't be hard to top it. Regarding day 1 DLC or DLC in general, I rather have complete games, then this bits and pieces garbage. A lot of companies even have the nerve to charge for DLC.

E3 is watching a stream. Nintendo Direct is watching a stream. Unless you are a journalist who attends E3, there's no difference between the two. You can watch both streams with friends and post on a forum while the event is happening.

By the way, did you know that Nintendo didn't attend gamescom last year? Or that they never attend the Tokyo Games Show?

I have to admit that I don't like day 1DLC either; but I can understand it if a lot less people gets them if it's released 1 month later. And I also prefer a whole game when I buy it, but I think Nintendo has got this one right; just look at Super Luigi U - THAT'S how you do DLC! All new content, all new challanges. It's like getting a second game!

Still, I don't find ND as exciting as e3 - and that's why a lot of people complain I think. They want that excitment. (Done right of course)

That's some interesting trivia I already knew.

Yes but they are pretty negative. When I read in sites like IGN ''Nintendo not holding a E3 press conference this year'', I actualy read ''Nintendo has become a shadow of itself, no longer relevant enough for a press conference at E3''.

Almost everything that will be shown at E3 (from any major publisher) gets leaked in advance. There's no excitement to be had nowadays, because everyone who followed gaming news leading up to E3 already knows what they will see. A lot of people still cling to their hopes that there will be surprises, but once E3 is over everyone is complaining about how disappointed they are.

I find NDs much more exciting than E3s, because of their respective track records. They are also more interesting to talk about on VGC, because there are less non-Nintendo fans around when they take place.

I never heard about NintendoLand until the actual e3 last year...

"there are less non-Nintendo fans around when they take place" touché!!! I have found that ND's are either very good or real snooze fests!

Terrible decision and no amount of damage control can defend it.
E3 is the biggest time of year where all the media from all spectrums come to see what is new. E3 get's covered from TV stations like MTV all the way down to local news stories. National media outlets pick it up and run stories.
Hiding away from that and saying it is better to give secretive interviews to the games media is like saying football teams would sell more shirts if the games were not shown. Which is rubbish.

These directs get almost zero exposure beyond the gaming websites. To think casuals will know about them is laughable. The only reason Nintendo are not going to have a conference is because they know the other two have a lot of things to show. It would appear that Nintendo doesn't have as much to show.
When the conferences come around a lot of Nintendo casual fans will wonder why they are not there, why they are not getting mentioned in the media. I can't help but think this will be far more negative then any bad conference they put on.

Stupid decision at a time when the Wii U really needs as much exposure as it can get.

Correct.  When the Wii was at the height of it's popularity this may have been an ok idea, since much of Nintendo's market was casuals who probably had never even heard of E3.  So they didn't need it.  But now?  The console has zero momentum.  Current owners and fans may appreciate and follow along with their intimate Nintendo Direct style events, but the general population - who they should be targeting, and who are desperately anxious to upgrade to the next generation - will be ohh'ed and ahh'ed by what Sony and Microsoft bring to the table.

*shakes head*

It's all about the game.

::Applause at the bold::

E3 is primarily watched by the core but gets publicized and leaked out to the masses. ND is only for the core. The views on the official page proves it. Of the big three Nintendo has the lowest Youtube numbers at its peak so ND helps very little. Will someone please slap Iwata?
