Call of Duty 4 = Modern Warfare

The Modern Warfare series is considered the "main" series until Black Ops came out. I guess Black Ops could be considered a spin off, but its already eclipsed the Modern Warfare games in terms of sales.(on a per game sales basis) The Black Ops name is just as popular as Modern Warfare, if not more.

So this Ghosts game would be the first spin-off in years. Who knows if it'll end up being the next big thing, is Activision just milking the series now or is this Ghosts game supposed to turn into a series?

Not really.
There is no connected storyline between CoD 1-4, though CoD 1 & 2 at least had one recurring character and that is Price.

Then there is the Modern Warfare series. CoD4(MW1)-MW3
Then World at War and the Black Ops games, which are connected as well.

You could call CoD Finest Hour and CoD2 Big Red One spin offs since the main series was only done by Infinity Ward at that time and those were the only games (not counting handhelds) that didn't release on the PC - the main platform of the series.

Now Ghost *could* be the start of a new series or is indeed just a spin-off.
