Forums - Sony - PS3 never made a comeback! PS3 has consistently outsold X360

Some people seem to confuse past statements. PS3 back then was compared to PS2 because it sold far less than its predecessor, that´s why people said it underperformed. What did PS2 sell in 6-7 years? 130m-140m? Compare it to todays PS3 userbase (6-7 years = 75m) and you understand what the topic actually was about.

That PS3 would outsell X360 was a widespread consent early on, it is actually quite more surprising that even after 6 years PS3 didn´t achieve this yet.

Yes, the PS3 was set to overtake x360 and Wii, of course. Many thought that a headstart of 360 would be destroyed right away, especially as the PS3 offered a processor like a supercomputer ;) It is always the perspective: In the years before PS3 really closing up, alligned launches were argued -> PS3 better than 360. Now it's perhaps getting better in sales in total, now it's a comeback. People are always trying to spin facts so that your favored product looks better than the other or/and the other product looks worse than yours.

I remember the thread which was dug out here where people discussed how many units 360 will sell - almost all were wrong ;)

Or take this thread: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=90982 It's from 09 and it reads so familiar like the thousand other threads...

Ahhh yes of course, completely forgot about the old "aligned launch" excuse.

See, that's the thing - one argument to say that it was always beating the Xbox 360...now we have a totally different argument to say that it made a comeback - By the same members!

Everyone likes to have their cake and eat it but this is just silly,

Would like to add...

The people saying that it made a comeback never ever even conceded it was in trouble at the time. Now since a comeback is a positive word to use, it was in trouble a few years ago.

...The same people might I add that said it would beat the Xbox 360 in a year or two, years ago,

You guys should get into stock trading, you have some serious prediction skills!!!

What I can't understand though is how you got the numbers for PSABR so very wrong?

I guess every trader has their off day eh ;)

Exactly. I tried some googling and found some nice threads:

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=93692&page=2 : PS2 is repeating itself with PS3, domination begins in 2010

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=6963 My XBox 360 vs PS3 comparison (mostly technical) (that OP! 2007!)

How times are changing minds and opinions... But also strange to see how many people got a permaban on this site. Perhaps the mods were more strict back then?

Excellent OP, the proof is definitive. There was no comeback, it always sold better as we have been told ever since 2009.

Well of course it was selling less early on, it launched a year later. lol

You know how people used to really want to talk about aligned launches.... I presume they don't want to talk about that when discussing this subject?

To paraphrase "lulz... with aligned launches PS3 is already ahead and has been pretty much since it launched"

Now... "what a comeback!"

Carry on reaching for those cherries. Pick your data accordingly and hope nobody notices.

aligned launch=/=total numbers.  The 360 had a lead.  Now it's going away.  Simple as that.  No sports examples needed.  PS2 made a comback on the Dreamcast.  SNES made a comeback on Genesis.  Besides even going with your pace thing what about if PS3 beats out Wii?  Will you consider that a comeback or will it be "too late" because Wii has a successor therefore making millions of sales somehow irrelevant along with product longevity?  Cause that seems to be the popular excuse now too.

Updated OP with this:

It becomes VERY clear looking at this that PS3 never were doing to poorly, and simply increasing its sales somewhat is not the definition of a comeback. And that's what PS3 did; it always sold on par with X360 and managed to increase its sales a bit. That's nothing like the supposedly stunning comeback people are talking about.

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I don't quite know if this is a response to the OP, or to most of the replies in the thread ^^

It is in response to most of the posts in this thread....  arguments shift to suit the agenda.  When it is tried in reverse people get very animated.

Aligned launches were used during 2007,8,9,10,11 and 12 by a certain section of fans to show how well the PS3 was doing, but NOW they are ignored because its great to say "What a comeback!".

More evidence for you....

Annual sales of 360 and PS3 from their respective launch:

Speaks for itself.

lol I just updated the OP, right before you posted this ^^ I'll add this as well if you don't mind?

After reading "PS3 is outselling the 360 weekly", "only 2009 360 was better" and so on we can now see how some try to put this into "but 360 sold better in 2009 (or was it 2010? Idk)! What a comeback for PS3 after this!" Ridiculous, really and not changing any number. Just interpreting numbers as one wishes.

But still thanks for this graph. I am curious how PS3 will be down YoY in its 8th year.

The funny thing is that in this very thread some "were" surprised that PS3 sales got higher after it´s first years. Are you serious? PS3 started with 499$-599$ when it came down in the more mass market friendly pricepoint it sold accordingly. It really seems that some really want to spin this into some extraordinary one in a million comeback just for the sake of it. PS3 had full 3rd party support from the get-go so I really don´t understand what exactly some are trying to argue about.

Also just as a reminder X360 has been irrelevant in Japan which lead to (8-9) million-units in favour of PS3. Of course this sales are as valuable as the sales in others regions, but more information to put things in perspecive aren´t bad anyway ;).

You're absolutely right, and that's kinda why I created this thread. When I started toing some (shallow) research I soon realised that there wasn't any comeback! That doesn't mean PS3 did bad; it actually has done (relatively) well!!
