Lots of people seem to overlook the merits of a great soundtrack in a game. A great soundtrack, for me at least, a very good game into an excellent game.

Modern games seem to lack something in the soundtrack department. Maybe because composers aren’t restricted to 8/16 bits and can do the full-blown Hollywood score thing, which always ends up a bit generic. There are definitely some modern classics out there though.

Let’s start off with Donkey Kong Country 2. It's one of the all-time great platformers, pretty difficult, and had a brilliant soundtrack to boot. Highly recommended if you haven't already completed it.

The Pokemon Franchise has always had an amazing soundtrack. Every game seems to have a theme to it.(Ruby/Sapphire = Trumpets, Diamond/Pearl = Somewhat Classy, Black/2 and White/2 = Fast-Paced and modern.)

I really enjoy their soundtracks.

Ah, Final Fantasy soundtracks really do it for me. Yummy.

Anyways I feel like soundtracks were amazing until like the first years of the sixth generation, and then everything just seemed to fall off.

Red Dead Redemption - So atmospheric, fits in with the game perfectly.

Listened to the entire FF7 OST so many times.

While a videogame may age in gameplay and visual appeal may no longer be high... Avideogames soundtrack has the potential to be timeless.
