Forums - Gaming - What else do the Big 3 need for next gen consoles to get strong initial sales?

Tagged games:

Compare this to reason why you bought, or didn't buy a Wii/PS3/360.

The WiiU/PS4/720 have a lot of great new features, which will help promote sales, but what else do you think the PS4, 720, and Wii U need to capture good initial sales?

----

For me:

I think the PS4 needs a low/reasonable price, a few good exclusives, and backward compatibility. The reason I bought a 360 over a PS3 in 2007 was mainly because the 360 had backward compatibility, and because the PS3 had no good exclusives. I never owned an X-Box, so if I bought a 360, I could play older XB games like Conker, and Halo 2, while I wait for 360 exclusives to release. Plus Gears of War and Lost Planet were amazing exclusives (LP was exclusive at that time). Ontop of that the 360 was a reasonable $400, not like the $600 PS3.

Killzone 4 and InFamous are great, but they won't convince non PS3 fans to get the system, and with The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, and potentially GT6 being released on PS3, they aren't much reason to move on just yet.

I think the 360 needs to change the way they sell XBL Gold subscriptions, address reliability concerns, and release good new IP exclusives. Over the past 4 years, 360's exclusive lineup has been gradually deteriorating. It's at the point where we got 2-3 exclusives a year, and they are almost always Halo/Forza/Gears. NextBox needs to release with something else, something new and good. A good Banjo Kazooie/Conker/Perfect Dark game would do wonders. XBL Gold also needs to be changed, there needs to be different levels of XBL. Change Gold to platinum, and make a new gold for gamers who play games stagardly. Don't punish gamers who only play online frequently for 3 months a year, and ocassionally for the other 9 months. Maybe make a pay as you play card, charging $0.10 per hour played, so people who play <10 hours a month only pay <$1. This will justify XBL. Reliability is also a big issue, one that hurt the 360 image, MS needs to make sure new systems have a much smaller fail rate.

Backward compatibility as a $100 add on is great, but right now I don't see the 720 doing well.

As for WiiU, WiiU needs games for the casual. When Wii came out everyone bought one for Wii Sports, and then down the road Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Wii Fit, etc. Nintendo has announced several games core the hardcore Nintendo gamers (Pikmin, Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, Zelda, Smash Bros., X, SMT x. Fire Emblem, etc), but very little for the core (Wii U Party, and Wii U Fit). Nintendo needs to make a Wii U Sports and bundle it with the console again, and then they need to make a new IP which will appeal to the casual. Maybe Wii/Mario Golf, or something else that really takes advantage of the touch screen. Maybe Brain Age? That would work well when someone wants to watch the TV. Nintendo should also make it possible to use a 3DS as a Wii U Gamepad.

WiiU has done a lot for the hardcore gamers. Nintendo is pushing for more 3rd party support, and I think, at least compared to the Wii/Gamecube, it's going to get it. It won't be like the SNES days, but I think WiiU will get more 3rd party support on a console then Nintendo has recieved in a long while. Now Nintendo needs to focus on the casual.

Sony needs to launch the PS4 that will make the sales of it exploded.

The games already announced to launch will help even more and the games announced in E3 will just make the PS4 the most sexy machine in the market.

This is the best idea I've heard for online.  One question though.  Can they track if you're actually playing online or just connected?  Cause I hardly ever play online MP but I do access the store and apps a lot.  This idea is great because then those who are incurring the cost of maintaining servers and security are the ones paying more.  PS could implement this if they don't want to take a hit online next gen.

Well I'm already sold and I've never bought a system at launch.  Probably a product of the extra long console cycle as well.  I just hope PS+ covers all the online features at the current price.  That's honestly what I'm really looking forward to getting some clarity on at E3 or sooner.  Also let's hope they confirm Infamous for launch and reveal ND's new game from the Uncharted 3 team.

So, if the games announced for PS4 are enough, how come the launch games for PS3 wen't enough? Are Killzone and InFamous >>>> Resistance and Motorstorm?

Where there is a will, there is a way. When you access multiplayer the system scans if you have XBLG, that could be the point where they start the clock, and when you exit multiplayer mode, they stop it.

Microsoft won't do this, and this is why I hate XBL. Some months I don't go on at all, or maybe go on for an hour, yet it's still $5!

Sony needs price and a 3rd party exclusive. I can see that being Final Fantasy.

Microsoft needs whatever new shooter IP they have.

Nintendo needs more Mario (They're going to keep throwing him at it.) But they really do need something better than feggin Nintendoland to show off gamepad viability.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie  Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)

Ps4 has more than just Killzone and Infamous. Ps3 had more than resistance and motorstorm but Ps4 3rd party launch titles >>>>>> the ps3 ones

Killzone > Resistance
DriveClub > Motorstorm
inFAMOUS
Knack
Watch Dogs

These are the confirmed... add Diablo III, The Witness, Deep Down, CoD, FIFA, AC, BattleField, The Witcher 3, Destiny, etc.

Now wait the first-party E3 titles... every Sony first-party have a game to show.

PS4-I agree with your points, the exclusives will prob be addressed at e3. At this point I'm more excited for the 3rd party games on ps4 like the witcher and destiny. I do like killzone and drive club too though.
Durango-I really like your idea of xbox live, not sure if that will happen though. They def need more exclusives too
Wii U-Quite frankly, I don't see Nintendo winning over the casuals again to the same effect as the wii. They shouldn't divide their attention so much on the two fronts. The wii u seems to be having an identity crisis. It falls somewhere in between a causal and regular gaming machine. 3rd parties are a must for the console too.

Watch Dogs is not exclusive, and after the first 4, they are all available on either 720 or PS3, or both.

PS3 also had Genji, Heavenly Sword, Lair, and a few other 6/10 games, but yea I see what you mean.

Still is that enough? While you might like Killzone over Resistance sells just as well, if not better (R1 sold over 4 million). Plus Resistance was a new IP in 2006, Killzone and InFamous are not.

----

IMO it's not enough. It's enough to please the core PS3 fans, but PS4 needs more then keeping PS3 fans to become successful. Then again, I am arguing about initial sales, and initially, most owners are going to be PS3 fans upgrading.
