The 3DS is on fire right now, and with so many heavy hitters to come this year, its going to be an absolute monster this holiday season. And this from a system that at one point was labelled "doomed." It goes to show, never judge a system by its opening.

It sold more its first month then any other video game system ever has. Same goes for first 6 months & first 12 month sales.

And the Wii U sold more in its first month then almost any home console, but of course the Wii sold even more it's first month.

I think the first 1 month sales say a lot, and same goes for first 6 month sales, and first 12 month sales & first 18 month sales & first 2 years sales.

3DS sales before its price cut were below expectations, hence the reason for the cut itself, and Wii U sales at the moment are pretty dismal. The 3DS exploded once it got compelling software though, and Wii U should show improvement once the big hitters arrive also.

The press doesnt care. For them the portable market is dead and phones and tablets are all that matters.

Facts? Who cares about those? Its another prime example of the press beeing influenced by lobbies and trying to pass it on to us.

I think the 3DS has reached point where it has a ton of great old titles to pick up for cheap and plenty of games to look forward to in future. Luigi's Mansion has recieved high enough reviews to trigger the threshhold.

People always talk about a AAA title saving a system making it a super success. But in NA/Europe especially, its about the software ecosystem and now the 3DS's is finally thriving.

I'm going to wait till pokemon to pick one up.

Along with it I'll get Zelda Ocarina of Time, Luigi's mansion and Bravery Default if its out in europe this fall.

Comparing a younger system to two older ones is something not worth bragging about.

Tell that to Wii U haters

It was below expectation, but above all other gaming systems sales for same period. And that's before price cut.

But yeah, software is all that matters to most of us western gamers, luckily for Nintendo.

Where in the world are you getting that from? 3DS was not the best selling system at any point in any region within the first year, except for Japan. Same for Wii U in first month sales.

Also, you have ridiculously high expectations for Luigi's Mansion. 10m lifetime? Cmon dude. Just be glad that it is selling reasonably well.

3DS NA sales this week is probably just a case of VGC making up for horribly undertaking it these past few months.

Assuming we are talking US sales, very little of this post is true.  The first month of the 3DS was below many other systems.  The Gamecube sold more, the Wii U, the Wii, PS2, Xbox, PSP, DS, GBA, maybe others.  As for 6 and 12 months, at 6 months it was behind the Wii, PS2, PS3, 360, Xbox, GBA, Gamecube, N64, and PSP.  I'm having a tougher time finding data on older systems for 12 months, but I can at least say it is behind the Wii and GBA.

Same for the Wii U.  It was below the Wii, Gamecube, DS, and Xbox, etc.

I really don't know where you got the numbers to make those claims.  Maybe you were talking worldwide sales, but even then it wouldn't be true.

About time. When I first got my 3DS and started playing, all I could think about was "how in the world does this thing not sell in the West?" It's a solid handheld with a huge library of great games to draw upon. All the games I've played so far, I've really enjoyed. And the 3D effects, while not necessarilly a selling point, look really cool. Not to mention it is relatively cheap now. And this is coming from someone who was a former 3DS skeptic.
