When XBL costs <$60 a year, the deal is usually only available over XBL, using a credit card. You can't buy XBL Gold subscriptions over XBL without a credit card, and at retail, $60 cards are almost never <$50 on sale. As for Silver weekends, I'm pretty sure I've played on a wednesday/thursday before as a silver account user. Not until the update in 2009 (I think) did I ever have a problem playing Halo 3 online as a silver member.

I've never used my credit card on XBL. I bought ALL of my 12 month Gold cards from Amazon and I've never paid more than $39.99.

On sale? How?

Anyway I only want a 1 month card. Apparently US cards work here, and you can get a 1 month card off eBay for <$10 I think. I don't play much online, but when I get GoW: Judgement, I want to play it online a bit.

This is my method.

I buy 12 Month XBL Gold cards on Amazon. Since I only need to buy them once a year I watch for sales. If there's a sale I buy one or two even if I have months left on my last card. That way I never get to the end of a XBL Gold subcription and get forced to pay full price.

If I where you I wouldn't waste $10 on a 1 month card when you can get 12 month on sale. But if you can't find a sale before you need it I guess you'll be stuck.

"I gotta move Steam aside to get to Netflix. That's why I gave up on PC gaming."

i think that has to be the quote of the thread right there lol

Seriously? That's your justification?
So let me get this straight, you're happy to throw away a larger and superior game selection, better graphics, better controls, better framerates, cheaper prices on Games and DLC, convenience of all your games and mods in one place, automatic patching, arguably a higher bandwidth/lower latency network as it's not provided by just one company, more dedicated servers...

Not to mention the ability to give games to your friends, review games, big picture mode if you're using a Television, lots of free-to-play games, Pre-loading of pre-ordered games, available on multiple platforms, greenlight, screenshot functionality and probably a heap more, for just netflix? When you can still get Netflix just by double clicking an icon next to Steam? That's like, what 2 clicks? Not even 1 seconds worth of effort? Like, wouldn't even use a dozen calories?

Not to mention you can ADD a netflix shortcut into Steam which makes your ENTIRE argument completely redundant.

And more people use Steam than the amount of people that exist on Xbox Live! Gold, so higher player counts too.

If you want both Steam and Netflix on screen at the same time, look into a multi-monitor solution, PC gaming is easy and effortless, youtube and google which is the largest repository of information known to man-kind has all the answers you need if you ever run into issues, people should learn to use it to better themselves more often, rather than making up excuses.

Well it looks like 6mil more people are getting ripped off just to play the same 2 games each year when they can play better games online for free on psn. Their loss not mine

1. You shouldn't tell other people what they can and can't do with their money. They earned it and if they like what they are paying for they aren't being ripped off.

2. You have considerably underestimated the number of games on Xbox 360.

3. Your opinion of what games are better has nothing to do with what games other people consider worth paying to play online.

It's actualy your loss, not theirs.

I'm sure the 6 million new members is absolutely nothing to do with the annual banwaves or the spate of new nokia lumina phones that integrate xbl features, or people just making new accounts and other such things, it's for sure just 6 million people that went out and paid full retail for a years subscription...

Really though, registration numbers mean nothing, i freaking dare you to find a person that has just one account on the ps3 or 360.

As for the argument of "is it worth it", that's entirely up to the individual, sure it would be nicer if it was free, but it is not, you either pay or you dont, if your opinion is it's crap then that's your *opinion*, there are millions of paying live members who would dissagree, just like theres millions of potential online players who wish it wouldn't cost them extra to play online.

My only issue with it is that premium services should be a 'value added service', rather than an 'added service', so here's hoping the next xbox will allow a modcrum of online functionality for games, and just reserve access to premium servers and such for gold members.

In this case though, they do mean something. When MS announces how many Xbox live users there are, they are only counting active accounts (Which I believe is any account used within the last 8 months). So any old accounts aren't counted. Most Xbox users I know only have 1 main account at a time because of the way Live accounts work (most don't want to start a new account after putting so much time and money into that account). Sure virtually everyone I know has made other alternate 1 or 3 month accounts (I have 3 of them myself from back in the Halo 3 days, nothing even remotely current though) before just as mess around accounts in CoD or Halo but those accounts aren't counted after a certain time period.

So as far as these numbers are concerned, they really are rather insightful and far from meaningless. I would reckon around 80% of the 46 million are unique accounts.

That seems like a really bizzare number of months to choose. Any idea why it's 8 months?

Personally, it'd be nice if there was some kind of industry standard when it came to reporting these numbers (doubt that's ever going to happen) so the numbers are actually somewhat comparable. For instance, Steam reports active accounts as someone that's purchased a game and has logged in in the last 30 days. Sony on the other hand just report the number of accounts accross PSN which is obviously huge.

Trying to figure out what's actually relevant is near impossible.

I have both consoles, all of the games worth paying for LIVE for me, i play for free on PC, i don't miss a thing.

try it sometime.. and don't give me that crap about 'costs too much to own more than one console', you can pick up a second hand 360 for the price of a psn+ sub, and a second hand ps3 for the price of a live sub.

You're completely wrong about better games on PSN. But this is the right attitude!

"Better games" is a highly subjective thing and will vary from person to person, when people say *any* particular platform has better games, take their "opinion" with a grain of salt and do your own research on the games you will enjoy to see which platforms they're on.

Who exactly hates XBL Gold?

People who pay for it surely don't hate it otherwise they wouldn't pay.

People who have Xbox 360's but don't pay pay for XBL Gold, some probably hate it but whatever, that was their choice to go with a console that charges for some things that others don't. No point in crying about it now.

People who don't have Xbox 360s are more bemused/confused/amused by it.
