Forums - PC - AMD Q1 2013 earnings: revenue down 31% YoY

Well I just picked up dual HD7950s and FX8350 and a Gigabyte UD7 AM3+ mobo. All in AMD!

Will probably sell my GTX 670s SLI/3570k rig after I do a benchmark shootout between the two...screw you Nvidia and Intel, AMD needs my money. :)

I'm rather curious to see in eyefinity how FX 8350+7950s does VS 8350 + GTX 670s vs 3570k + 7950s VS 3570k + GTX 670s.

I bought about 40 AMD GPUs in the past 3 weeks. Expect their stock to skyrocket.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Hold on...Was it 40 HD5450s or 40 7970s?

Hmmmm, life would be interesting if they sold the graphics division to Intel...... would be very very interesting then...........

And before anyone asks an ARM Cortex-A15 based CPU is pretty comparable to Jaguar in terms of features, but much more power effeciant. And I dare say an 8 core A15 CPU at 2.5GHz (The highest reference spec) would probably outperform an 8 core 1.6/2Ghz Jaguar based one by a large margin. Plus the nature of the ARM licensing means that they are cheap and highly customisable.

False, or at least you can't just say that. No one's isolated the power of just an A15 core vs just a Jaguar core on the same workload yet.

An 8-core A15 would not outperform this because i) it's not 64-bit and ii) ARM memory bandwidth is very low, and iii) and this is important, it DOESN'T EXIST. If you want it to, it will take 2 years to come to market (not kidding) by which time AMD may well have something better.

I don't get the 2 years to come to market comment, the Cortex-A15 has been available to license since 2011 and there are devices on the market right now unlike Jaguar. I had fogotten that it was still 32bit address space per thread and that could be a slight issue, but it's got 40-bit physical address space so 8GB of RAm isn't an issue. For memory performance some modifications would of course have to be made, Sony had to make modifications to the memory system for the PS4 anyway. They have made larg strides in memory performance since A9. The area where Jaguar really wins is SIMD but Cortex A15 isn't the shitshow that A9 was in that are ether.

We will have to wait until some actual Jaguar based devices get out there so they can be compared. Closes thing I could find is this that uses Bobcat

Samsung Chromebook Performance Comparison
SunSpider 0.9.1 BrowserMark RIABench Focus Tests Kraken
Atom N570 1.66GHz 1034.3 ms 152780 1968 ms 14229.5 ms
Exynos 5 Dual 1.7GHz 690.5 ms 217031 1192 ms 9733.2 ms

Which is pretty worthless

Mixture of 7850s and 7950s.

More to the point ARM is competitive with Intel Atom's "Medfield", the new Atom's will be faster than ARM when intel moves Atom to an OOO design, Jaguar should put both to shame in the CPU department in terms of IPC.

To put it into perspective though, only recently has ARM surpassed Atom which is a 5 year old CPU design in terms of performance, an Intel Pentium M (Which was the basis for the Core 2 Duo) is roughly twice as fast as Atom in terms of IPC at the same clock.

However, with that said, they're all pretty poor performers which-ever way you cut the cake, they're all chips that go into low-powered devices like Netbooks, Tablets and Phones, it's what Desktop PC's had in terms of performance per-thread over a decade ago.

Yeah. Hopefully it gives them a financial boost.
AMD *needs* to be competitive in the high-end again, it increases the amount of price compression in Intel and AMD's lineups which is better for all PC gamers regardless of what platform you opt for, not to mention the only real competition Intel has is AMD on the GPU front and ARM on the power efficiency front, both of which Intel are making large strides in. (Provided you care for low power consumption and a fast IGP, I personally don't.)

If anything, you shouldn't notice much difference between CPU's, I didn't notice much when moving from an AMD FX to a Core i7 3930K when gaming in Eyefinity.
At eyefinity resolutions you are ALWAYS GPU limited first and foremost, so if you ever want big gains, look at the GPU's.

Also hope you don't run into stutter, I ended up going Tri-Fire to get around that. :)

The focus of ARM has always been power effeciancy above all else, and their primary market is phones rather than tablets and netbooks like Atom. It's only recently that ARM is starting to get into the server space and the rise of tablets that they have been pushing more raw computing power. While SIMD performance has always been pretty poor on ARM (A15 is a significant improvement over A9, but Jaguar is a lot better) their IPC performance is actually not bad at all compaired to current competition. 4.01 DMIPS/MHz with a few tweaks http://www.itproportal.com/2011/03/14/exclusive-arm-cortex-a15-40-cent-faster-cortex-a9/ vs 3.125 For Bobcat (Jaguar is said to have 15% higher IPC) and embarrassingly enough 3.78 for Bulldozer lol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instructions_per_second#cite_note-42. And I know DMIPS is an outdated metric but still.

But yea performance on Jaguar, Atom and A15 is all pretty awful vs a modern desktop CPU no matter how you look at it even with 8 cores.

Yeah I realized this a while ago when I picked up GTX 670s and put them in to SLI in a Phenom II 965 rig first and then found a quad SLI EVGA z77 mobo for sale for 79 bucks and built a 3570k rig. In synthetics 3570k was killing the phenom rig however in eyefinity there was less than 10% performance difference.

I actually did some very interesting benchmarks last night using 3 diffrent CPUs and a 7950. Will post my findings soon...

As far as microstuttering, we shall see. I have a gigabyte UD7 mobo which is probably the best AM3+ mobo right now. 4 way SLI/crossfire... if another card is needed, so be it. :)
