People that expect PS4 to be $400....

You're being delusional. Sony's not going to try take a $100+ loss again. They don't have the funds to.

are YOU insane? It is highly unlikely that Sony would ever put forth a device that would force them to lose such a huge amount on it and no way they will start at anywhere near $600 again. This was stated by them already that the system would be "nowhere near" the starting price of PS3. 100bucks is not that much cheaper than that so $399-$450 is most likely in worst case scenario.

Sony is obviously geting some crucial deals on all their parts. We already know AMD is basically giving them top notch work for chump change. They most likely have the hook up for the RAM as well.

I imagine it will be a similar situation to the Vita, regardless of how good the system is doing, it is still currently profitable. Every Vita sold is money in the bank. Same will go for PS4, where it is at least making some small amount of profit. I think the parts all together are probably costing Sony no more than $320.

They have never stated this. And I imagine they are selling for a moderate loss going by the razor and blades approach. They are selling their memory cards at absurd prices to make up the loss. The only thing they have stated is that Vita will be profitable after some years.

It is far more likely that they are currently selling the Vita at a loss than a profit. (maybe not in NA now but for sure in Japan.)

R&D costs, marketing, shipping add to the price. $449 is a possibility but $399 is pushing it.

Sony hasn't come out and said it themselves but many small studies have already stated the parts within the Vita cost them less than $160(as they will obviously be getting each part at a discount in bulk). R&D is such a broad yet vague demerit of cost. Honestly, you never expect to make your R&D/Manufacturing/ Retail costs back from the system by itself, rather alongside individual game sales and services. This has pretty much always been the case. So with a maximum of cost for creation being 160, that leaves $90 in question of how to allocate. That is far more than any other console even thinks of making as an immediate return.

To compare, the PS3 wasn't even making back the money to cover it's manufacturing parts upon release.

PS4 will emulate what the Vita did. Mid-High end parts, gotten at a really good price, leaving Sony some wiggle room for profit and price cuts.

The 3DS parts were worth $101 and was selling at $170 at a loss. No way in hell they're making a $90 profit per unit on this thing.

Again Vita memory cards. Razor-blades approach. Vita's being sold at a moderate loss.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie  Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)

"In the broadest sense" tells me that he means to say there will be a lot of options for different PS4's. They'll probably have a "basic" and "deluxe" set kind of approach, in their own way.

I have posted the components and their prices before. It adds up to somewhere near $500. That was wholesale too, if they're getting a better deal than that, which they probably are, it will still cost $450-475. I expect a $400 basic model and $500 premium model. That's still a heavy loss. R&D, shipping, ads, actually putting the console together add price too

I hope 400$ at most.

I expect:
$399,- 32gb flash version (or 28gb whatever is left after OS, same as with the 12gb super slim) + demo disk
$499,- 500gb hdd version with ps+ trial.

If Sony put a $500+ version with SSD I'm sold.

$399 US DOLLARS!! And you know what the game is going to launch with. Been a launch title for most consoles since the release of the PSX. Every Sony console.

I think it'll be $399.  $450 max.

Hopefully $349 or $399. $599 launch price hurt the PS3 significantly in its first year. PS1 and PS2 both launched at $299 price point. Wii won this generation based on $249 attractive price point. Most consumers buy a console system based on its price.
