Forums - Gaming - Xbox 720 and PS4 AAA Titles Will Kill Mid-level Competition

It amuses me too see just how ignorant these companies are when acknowledging mid-budget contributions to the success of last gen. system sales.

Good luck though.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

sounds like the perfect market for WiiU.

Nintendo will always be in the middle, filling the gap, i.e. the money maker while all others go broke. Nintendo has a much more sustainable business model when it comes to being profitable at making games.

I love My Wii U, and the potential it brings to gaming.

There will always be B games and there will always be a market for b games. Not everyone only buying games with high budget and 90+ metascore. In the end the normal consumer ( not the hardcore gamer like me and you)doenst read any reviews.

I smell bullshit.

There is room for B games, but not with a $60 price tag.

those cheaper games will always be there, the money and support from these systems will permit it.

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

I don`t know if these B games will disappear, but it wouldn`t be surprising to see them diminish in numbers. Not only because people are more focused on AAA titles, but mostly because more human resources are being allocated to develop the AAA titles. Which means, less studios available for those B games.
Of course, with costs rising more for this gen, it`s bound to be less money for all projects.

To me that`s the big reason for less B games = less human resources.

DelioPT: Sound logic but what about this. If B Games will be cheaper to produce than they will rather spend 20 million making 5 B games than 20 million for one AAA game. If anything could happen next gen than its less AAA games.

@SunofKratos: That`s a good question. The problem is that they know that AAA sell and bring in more Money and if they don`t develop a AAA game, other will do it. So they might be passing on some serious money.
And as i said, there`s a limit on how much people you have available. For exemple, Ubisoft will be using 8 studios to develop AC 4 or Watch Dogs (can`t remembre which one is it) and that will, in a fiscal year, give them less resources to develop more B games.

One thing`s for sure, something will have to give: either spend more time in development with more resources being used or less time in development with more resources being used. The money spent might be the same in those two situations.
Either way, it will be tough to handle things as they are now, when with each generation, more and more people and money are used to make games.

that's what they wish for, in a time where more and more aaa studios will give up cause of too high costs indie developers will REALLY begin to shine.
