Forums - Gaming Discussion - How will the Wii U fit games on the PS4, if the PS4 will have 7GB RAM available?

When I played the Wii versions of COD I was genuinely surprised at how good they were, and using the Wii Zapper was the best way to play COD. It's a fair point to say that as the % of RAM available between Wii/PS3 and Wii U/PS4 is about the same and therefore PS4 titles should be able to be ported over to Wii U with some concessions made.
Does anyone know if it is possible for the Wii U to utilise more of its 2GB of RAM in the future with a system update?

The Wii U only utilizes 1GB of Ram or less....thers no reason to harm the art direction of next gen games for the Wii U. The Wii U just needs to get some exclusive games and they'll be fine.

Wow nice find. This was pretty much what I was expecting given the difference in specs. These games are severely gimped in terms of gameplay and not just graphics.

Which then has me asking: Would Activision of even bothered to try with the Wii versions of Call of Duty if it wasn't the top selling console?  If the Wii U doesn't dominate, will companies bother trying to do stripped down versions of games so they work on the Wii U, or not bother?  I have to ask, because the signs now are companies are not bothering to do this.

Pretty much. Unless Wii U starts pulling magical numbers out of nowhere and completely outsells the PS4/720 like the Wii did, developers/publishers probably won't even bother. Even if the Wii U did sell a ridiculous amount like the Wii somehow, even then developers/publishers will be skeptical given their experience with the Wii and software not selling well enough compared to the HD twins despite having such a large install base. As for as COD and Activision, one only needs to look at the Wii U version of BO2 and see how sales went on that.

I still do think that initially, at least until the 360/PS3 are still in the market and devs are getting the hang of next gen platforms, they probably won't be using the full power of the next gen consoles, at least until then the Wii U will get ports of some 3rd party games. But after a few years in the mid to late period of the cycle once the devs start to tap into the full power of the new consoles, I think porting games over to the Wii U will probably result in what you saw above in the case of COD, or what Skyrim could have been on the Wii. So it'll be unlikely to get ports. And this isn't even considering the sales aspect, which is a whole other beast. This is just in terms of what is possible and likely from a hardware perspective.

Nintendo could potentially allow more than 1GB for the games if they can streamline the OS and just make it more efficient. The PS3 did this where Sony later on allocated more RAM for games through a system update. So I don't see why Nintendo couldn't either.

If thats true then why  didnt have enough ram to do cross chat? Some things that are developed are set in stones in the hardware specs. Software is another issue I think.

Thanks. 70 MB isn't much though.

It's a 58% reduction in the size of the OS.

It's a lot for current gen where 252MB was available for games on PS3 initially iirc. 70MB is a huge boost over that.

You make a good point. In the next gen thats not going to fly, thats probably the train of thought I was in.
