Forums - Gaming - The old Tomb Raider games worth $9 for 3 games?

I love the first one. It's one of my favorite Saturn games. The 2nd one is really good too and has a lot of diversity in gameplay, like driving vehicles and swimming with sharks in scuba gear. The 3rd one is ok, it's harder than the others, but not in a good way. Revelations and Chronicles are decent, but just more of the same.

I mostly recommend the first two and if you like those maybe check out the others. With that said I can't recommend enough TR Legends, Anniversary and Underworld. They are fantastic and almost as good as the new Tomb Raider. Underworld is particularly excellent.

The only Tomb Raider game you should never play is Angle of Darkness. It's terrible.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is really good too, but so unlike the other games that it really has nothing to do with them other than star Lara Croft.

The first one was awesome and memorable, though graphics are obviously dated for the time, I got that first when I couldn't find TR2 at the store (I had played the demo on the Playstation disks and I LOVED IT). Two is probably better, but I kinda like the feel of the 1st one because it has a very 'lost' feeling to it. TR2, you definitely have a lot more going on with different scenes and such. I think both were very well executed games. TR3... I had that only one on PC and I liked it OK, it looked pretty damn good for the time... I didn't get too heavy into it so I never finished it, so I guess that means it's not as good as the first two. I can see most people's complaint about it being true, but it was still an OK game and there were a lot of cool things I liked about it.

I never played Last Revelations :( I'm going to wait until the pack goes back on sale again in Steam. It let you buy all of them for $15. However, I still have the original PS1 TR and TR2... I highly recommend playing those on console versus the PC. Though I played PS1 when I owned the original/gold edition for the PC, so it's still alright.

I did a speed painting in remembrance of the sharp polygon boobs from TR1 in the art thread. Obviously I'm a big fan.

More than worth it at that price

YES! The 1st one does totaly have a "lost" feeling or I'd say a isolated feeling. Lara is always on her own and the first game makes it feel like she is only has her wits and a pair of guns to get herself out of the most dangerious situations. The seconded gave her more tools and vehicles so it started to feel a little less like it was all her skills. I think that's why I loved the new Tomb Raider so much. She is isolated and alone just like the original.

BTW, I still love that polygon painting!

Oh you explained better what I meant when you said "lost". I was trying to think of what I meant and that fits so perfectly. I agree with what you said about the second one, so we feel pretty much the same about it. I was always worried they might have Sonic'ed the Tomb Raider series eventually and lose all that made it so good. The new TR sounds like a good direction for the series... I haven't had a chance to play it yet though so I can't say much else about it.

Thanks for the compliment :) I wanna go back and polish it. I haven't had much time to do anything. Right now people are not emailing me back and I am behind on everything else. So sad. lol

On topic, $9 is cheap for these games... OP should get them and play through the first two :) A lot of people seemed to like Last Revelations though it's one I'm missing from my collection. I'll probably wait for that Steam sale again

hopefully these sales don't make square enix bankrupt. They need to sell 25 million units.

Come on guys, get your hamilton's out and save square enix's ass

edit: i know these are not se games, just saying bs cause square is blaming million seller games for their financial troubles.

Definitely worth it. The first 2 were the best. The trailing camera was brilliant for atmosphere. Lara would run around the corner and the camera would catch up just in time to show a tiger jumping at you. A couple drinks were lost on the floor first time we played that.

The controls may be akward by todays standard but they make perfect sense for the puzzle platforming. You control Lara from her perspective, precise aiming and counting steps is all part of the puzzles. It works because the levels are all made up of squares.
It's the complete opposite of todays tombraider. Combat was sparse and not much more then silly jumping around while firing (auto aim). The puzzles and figuring out how to get to places was the main course.
Climbing on the giant sphynx head or exploring the upturned ship on the bottom of the sea, simply amazing at the time.

I have lots of fond memories of playing the 2nd and 3rd one in the dorm, crowded around the dining area tv, passing the controller around after each horrible death.

I haven't played the new one yet. Once I read the focus is more on combat instead of exploring tombs I decided to pass for now. Aniversary was great, the other new ones were ok, but already leaning too much towards combat for my liking.

Lol. I just re-read my comment and I can't believe how many awkward typos I left in it. I'm no Michael Crichton or anything, but I must not have even looked twice at it before hitting "post".

Anyway. I really enjoyed the new Tomb Raider and I can't recommend it enough. It gets compared to Uncharted and I think that's unfair. The new Tomb Raider is open and full of exploration that Uncharted just doesn't do. It has a few cool scripted action set pieces, but if that's all it takes to be an Uncharted clone pretty much all AAA games these days fit the bill.

I think it takes the best of the old Tomb Raider games, combines that with the best of the newer Tomb Raider games, and throws in modern game design to create something that I think Tomb Raider would have been in the begining if the technology had been available in the 90's to do it.

It took me about 21 1/2 to play through the first time and I didn't even complete all the challenges. I did all the optional tombs, but when it ended I hadn't 100%ed any of Lara's abilities or weapons. It's a good sized game with lots to do and it has some really cool fan services moments that I don't want to spoil.

You should give it a try.

So should I just get 2 from the sale or all three of the sequels?

Can you not get the first one? It and the second are the best of the originals. None of them are bad, but it seems odd to start anywhere but the begining.
