There's nothing the competition can do anymore to screw the Wii U, because Nintendo's console sells in such insignificant numbers. Any potential rise of the Wii U rests on the shoulders of exclusive software, so an affordable 360/PS3/Nextbox/PS4 isn't going to change anything.

I think it would really, really badly damage the Wii U with the kids/family market Nintendo usually leans on.

The price gap for similar-ish hardware and the 360 having the advantage on the software side would be ridiculously lop sided.

What advantage does the 360 have when it comes to kids/family games? Call of Duty is on the Wii U too, so I guess you are talking about Grand Theft Auto V.

Well lets see here. Lets say I'm a parent. I bust my ass at work every day to provide for my family. I have some young kids, the wifey tells me to go get them a game console as a birthday/Christmas gift.

Looking at Best Buy.com for 2 minutes to see their retail prices + factoring in a $99.99 XBox 360 ... I can get

XBox 360 Console - $99.99 (lets assume this rumor is true)

Lego Star Wars Collection - $19.99

Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 - $19.99

Soul Calibur V - $19.99 (good for two boys)

Viva Pinata - $14.99

Skylanders (Starter Pack w/3 figures + base) - $74.99

Total - $250

Can't even get a basic Wii U for that. Explain to that parent why they should get a $300 Wii U instead. Good luck. Skylanders is the *hot* game right now for kids too, not any Nintendo property.

Daddy gets this, and the kids are very happy, the mom's happy too that you didn't spend an arm and a leg.

All this assuming the kid doesnt already have a console already. And the kid is not up date.

I could maybe see a new 360 model with an extra 512MB of DDR3 RAM added maybe for OS functions, much like the DSi had over the regular DS/DS Lite models. Another shrink on the chip, smaller casing, etc.

This would never happen

If it's the 4gb, then I'll pass. I'm waiting for the 250 GB model to drop in price to at least $199.99 then i'll bite so I can finish Vesperia and Alan Wake.

1. You could buy a $99 4gb Xbox and order a HDD online.

2. If you just want to play a few exclusives, why do you need the HDD? A 32gb USB memory stick might be all the storage you need.

Yeah riiiiight. Drop $100 (50% of the lowest priced SKU), like that will happen. The 360 is selling great, they are not about to put it up for charity if not needed.

Senior editor of Verge said Stingray info is false.

And May 21 seems to be a date for more info.

If it's an always on device, I wouldn't care if it was 50 bucks. I don't want to buy a cable box or sign a contract, I just want to play games.

Don’t follow the hype, follow the games

Here a little quote I want for those to keep memorize in your head for this coming next gen.

You're talking about a previous-gen system being marked down for late adopters, versus a brand new console that's just beginning to build up an install base. I don't really understand the logic here. If anything it would squeeze out PS3 sales, as both systems appeal to a very similar audience. The 18-34 male/ shooter market. If Sony can't get the PS3 as low as this supposed $99 X360 model, then PS3 will be in trouble this holiday.

Not Wii U.

Xbox wont sell much more honestly, its in the final stage, top games wont be coming in 2014. Unlike WiiU, which has a bright future from 2014 on.

lol, the 360 will probably recieve more 3rd party titles in 2014 then the Wii U will. But yeah, nintendo will bring forth strong exclusives for the hardcore and they either have a 360 by now or never intend to buy one.

Sounds MS could be prepping a 360 redesign (Stingray) for $99.99.

Now the 720 sounds expensive ($500/$300 with XBox Live sub), but this new 360 could really screw the Wii U the way I see it.

They mostly have the same games already (third party wise, except the 360 has a ton more) and similar visual capabilities, but the 360 has a far bigger library, tons of cheap games, and better third party support.

If true, the Wii U would have to drop to $249.99 at least this fall, and even that is still looking very expensive by comparision. PS4/720 are kinda their own market the way I see it in a different pricing range aimed at hardcore gamers almost exclusively off the bat.

The ignorance from this post is almost palpable.

I don't buy its going to be $99. Maybe $150 - $169. A price drop that significant isn't necessary and would probably just cost MS money.

I think the way to go is a $50 cut and bundle it with some games.
