360 total ram: 522MB, PS3 total ram: 512MB but the big thing is that the 360 GPU can use 300+MB of that, while the PS3 GPU is limited to 256MB |
The RSX was able to access both memory pools 512mb. The Cell just 256 XDR and Xenos/Xenon 512 MB.
The whole architecture was somehow wrong: made with pure power in mind but
a) RAM wasn't good enough
b) RSX wasn't good enough
c) devtools were quite complicated and introduced a new isa
c2) the new isa and arch to learn could only be used at ps3 and can now be forgotten by devs... insane.
d) at least cell could be used to help the lame rsx
e) dual-shock as ever
f) mandatory installs due to slow bluray-drive
g) nice to have easy exchangable hdd's

If i remember correctly the gpu can access the system ram at a performance cost
The main issue was probably the memory architecture. Splitting it obviously caused some issues for certain multiplatform games. A little more would have helped too.
There are a few issues with the other components, but I think the pluses outweighed the negatives. The Cell was complex but has lead to some amazing first-party titles. The GPU could have been better and if Sony hadn't banked on a second Cell acting as a GPU they could have invested in a more modern GPU architecture. It's done the job this gen though. As for Blu-Ray, it helped sell some consoles and "win" the format war so I think it worked out for Sony.
The question should be 'what do the 360 fans think of the PS3' if the majority of comments made here are anything to go by!!
I voted for more than one.
Cell and Memory architecture were the main flaws of PS3, so that's where I'd make changes.
Bluetooth,WiFi,Bluray and no proprietary Hard Drive were good choices from Sony IMO.
Dump the Cell
Fix The memory
Could have been a cheaper and more powerful system.
Love the PS3 though.
Atto Suggests...:
Book - Malazan Book of the Fallen series
Game - Metro Last Light
TV - Deadwood
Music - Forest Swords

Just what I thought too lol.
OT: Colossal mistake. It resulted in some amazing looking games but at far, far too high a cost. Krazy Ken at his very Kraziest.

I just know I would've preferred them make the ps3 a cheaper console
I'm not the greatest when it comes to specs though so yea..
