Forums - Gaming - why do a lot people dismiss online gaming so much?

here is the thing, i love single player games, i really do. i love a good strong story, epic set pieces and awesome characters. but i also love online gaming, i love the rush of it all, the competition with other real people, needed to outwit or out skill others to win, the huge maps and the more dynamic gameplay.

i love online multiplayer, yet some gamers and i don't want to generalize, but some gamers who been playing for a really long time mostly, dismiss online gaming, they just don't care about it. if i got a nickel for every time i head someone say " i don't care about online" i would have a million bucks. some people just seem to dismiss it, even though there are a lot of games that provide very different experiences.

another thing i noticed is that reviewers dont seem to care much for it, when readying a review about a game that focuses mostly about online, for example CoD, i see a lot of reviewers talking A LOT about the single player, and rating the game more on their single player experience than their online one, yet the game is mostly about its online experience.

when a game has a traditional single player, reviewers seem to mostly care about it and really dismiss the online aspect of the game, even if its more important to the actual game.

so im just wondering, why do a lot of people do this?

It's what we grew up with.  Younger gamers now grew up in the social networking age.  They're used to Facebook, being online with friends in general, and so on.  They're into things like cross-game chat. People who have been gaming "for a really long time" grew up without online gaming.  We like what we became accustomed to in our defining years.  Many reviewers fall within this age bracket - older than the average gamer.

People like me grew up with single player.  The only multiplayer was local, with friends.  Playing against strangers online doesn't have as strong of an appeal for me as playing against my friends in the same room.

Another aspect is that many of the gamers online are younger and often annoying.  Listening to some 16 year old boy (who sounds the same as a 12 year old girl) yell racial and anti-gay insults every time I shoot them gets boring quickly.

i been playing video games for about 16 years and i only stated with online gaming in summer 2009. at first i actually dismissed online, and didnt even want to make a PSN account, though my brother did make one and i tried it, fell in love with it. my point is, i am one of those gamers who just played single player games for generations, i started off way back with the SNES. i still play and love single player games but i dont get why some gamers just dismiss it completely without even trying it. and why dont you just mute the players? thats been a major complain in this thread but i dont understand why people just wont mute them!

Single player rules but so does online.

I have had so many thousands of hours of fun online - with online shooters like ET: Quake Wars and Battlefield, RTS games like Age of Empires II, with RPGs like Dark Souls and Two Worlds II, and even with MMORPGs (Dark Age of Camelot back in the day was amazing).

Like the OP says, there's so much with multiplayer that is unique:
the adrenaline rush, the competition and pride, the dynamic gameplay with surprises and creativity, the competition and true challenge, the superior human AI, the social aspects like teamwork, friendship and the feeling of being a part of something bigger.

I prefer online gaming to be honest but i also like story. You know how the saying goes "If you are bad at something you dont like it" ;) Yeah that is my theory haha

From my experience though online gamers dont journey forums to often.

well i can say a reason for that is because mostly gamers on forums are the gamers who been gaming for a long time, and as i said in the OP,  a lot of those people do dismiss online gaming

I feel like the majority of gamers who have been gaming for multiple years (across a few gens or maybe literal decades) game not because other people in their life do (or not only because of that) but because they actually enjoy it. There are exceptions of course but many online focused games are less about fun gameplay/story, etc. and more about competition - which can be fun for some people (quite a few people) but is not fun for everyone.

Basically it's a preference thing, not everyone is going to enjoy the same things you do, that's something you have to just get over. You are in good company however as online gaming is very popular and only growing in popularity - across all forms of gaming really.

You can probably tell that I don't really enjoy multi-player(especially online) but I recently played Dungeon Defenders which was a blast and much better multi-player than single player for instance.

of course not everybody is going to enjoy online gaming, it would be ridiculous of me to think that everybody should like what i like. but my thread is about people who just wont try it out, and why reviewers seem to ignore it more often even though its very popular.

i can understand why a lot of people wouldnt like online gaming, i personally dont like all online games of course. but what i dont really get is why people just wouldnt try it out and go complain about it as well.

for example i read that quite a few people on here have already dismissed destiny because it has this focus on connectivity and online, and they are doing so without even knowing how it will work, just because it has the word "online"

I do play online sometimes.  It's not like we've never tried it.  I don't have a problem with online, I just don't go as crazy for it as some gamers do.  One of my biggest pet peeves about some new gamers is that they'll release a tiny single player portion that almost feels like an afterthought to the online component.

ohh i wasnt talkig about you, but some gamers in general

and i hate that as well, honestly i dont buy games that i feel are like that, i care about online a lot, but i also love me some single player games, and i wont spend my money on an boring afterthought

Problem with online is it requires people to play.

There are only a few games out there that can provide a solid user base for a long time (i.e. Tribes).

Console online games generally die after the generation ends. so that becomes annoying. Hence if you are really into online, I stick with PC as can always find a game.

Single player is preferred by many because if a game is designed well it will not date badly, aka LoZ: OOT which gives it a lot of replay value.

I did grow up with local multiplayer and lan multiplayer. Then I used to play online a lot from 1998 to 2007. After that I sorta lost interest. Shooters were a lot more fun in lan setup although I did play plenty games online with Counter strike, HL death match, Unreal tournament, Joint operations: Typhoon rising, etc. I played Everquest for almost 4 years, WoW for almost 3.

Yes it can be a lot of fun when you have the time to dedicate to it. Playing regularly with people you know is fun, but I don't have that kind of time anymore with kids growing up. Meeting up with friends is pretty much impossible now. So nowadays I do dismiss online features. It already takes me a couple of weeks to finish the single player campaign, plenty exposure to one game. If the online is integrated with the story like Dark Souls or Journey then it's fine. But jumping into an online game of for example Killzone once a week is zero fun. I rather play something new, got more games then time for anyway.

Sure I still try it now and then. FC3 co-op missions were a nice idea, though frustrating to play with all the bugs and people quitting as soon as it didn't go smooth as butter. Why do people say they like the challenge of online play, then quit as soon as they die once....
NFS most wanted was fun online, bar the waiting for people to get to the next challenge part. (yay for hurry up relocate timer)
Competitive shooters I don't care for anymore. I guess i grew out of those, played them enough when I was younger.

Anyway what I'm getting at is that it is more of a time issue. To enjoy playing online you need to either have a lot of time to invest into it, or have a set time that your friends are available too.

I didnt care for it at first, but lets be real. As you get older the idea of playing local MP games is going to go away. People move, have families, jobs. The days of people coming over to play Smash for hours on end are over. It sucks, but thats where online comes in. Ive played alot of games online this gen. COD, Bioshock2, Uno, Uncharted 2&3, Modnation, LBP, Goldeneye, Assassins Creed, etc. Its here to stay, whether some like it or not.

thats a problem i agree. also another thing is that a lot of my friends dont have the same gaming tastes as i do, my brothers dont like most of the games i love either. so online gaming is mostly where i can play multiplayer
