Indeed it is.   But allowing the trolls to run amok diverts those that want to engage in discussion into the troll feeding cycle and the discussion is lost.   

Fair question.  Tone and posting history are the 2 most useful means.   When a members posts nothing but negative news or always bashes a console and never posts in any other console forum, I think we can determine the intent.

while i actually think the premise of a rule like this is a good idea, i think when actually inforcing it a lot of trouble will happen. tone is something really hard to understand on the internet and forums, while user history can help, it will be really hard to decide whether or not a poster is actually misinformed or intentionally misinforming others. every user will claim that "he didnt know" and a lot of trouble will start by users claiming they were banned because they were misinformed and call it injustice.

there are also a lot of issue's were we simply do NOT know for sure whats going on. for example, back when nintendo announced WiiU had 1GB ram for game a debacle started on whether that is enough for next gen or not, at the time i was one of the users who thought it wasnt, and i talked about it. it turned out that i was misinformed on how RAM works in video games, but i did change my mind on a few stuff on the matter, but then fast forward a year later and turns out i was right, the RAM in the WiiU is no where near the amount in PS4/next xbox and my initial concerns were right. if i were banned it would have been complitily unjustified, since my main point that the RAM was low was correct. 

there are many cases like this, another example is when ethomaz said the past two months that the PS3 is undertracked, mods could have said he is giving out false information and banned him, then NPD numbers come out, and it turned out ethomaz was initially right and ps3 was undertracked. and there are MANY issue's were we dont know what is actually correct 100% and later information can come out and prove us all wrong. 

Your example wouldn't even apply.  A prediction on RAM amount is not the same thing as making negative claims against something with a history of making negative statements against that something.    It's not about whether the information itself was actually right nor not but the intent of the poster.   Did the poster present the information with the intent of cusing frustration, angering, or enciting other members?    I highly doubt your RAM predictions were stated with the intent just to piss people off.

But consider the alternative.  We let it continue and all the good posters that value good discussion will continue to leave.   Then you have a shell of a forum populated by trolls who would be hostile to new members that don't fit the same mind set they do.

I'd rather have a foum that does what it can to promote good dialogue amont its members than one that lets itself slowly decay under the guise of not wanting to unjustly ban a couple of people.    Those banned can come back or can be unbanned.   Those lost due to forum BS, never return.

trust me, i want the same thing that you want, for the good posted who value good discussions to stay. but i honestly think this rule will cause more trouble than good. and regarding to what you claim posted would do, posting megative claims against something with a history of making negative statement against that something, if the intent of causing frustration or angering people was there, the mods can ban him for either trolling or flaiming. this rule will only cause people to claim the mods banned them without a real reason because they are bais or whatever the mods are called these days. it will only make the mods job even harder. 

what your suggesting can be done easily with the mods just being more strict, anybody who fucks around and wants to cause shit can be banned within the current rules, the mods just have to be more strict to do so. 

but just to point it out, i do agree with your concerns about what might happen with the site if the good posters keep leaving because of the trolls, i really hope that stops to happen and the good posters continue comming, there are some really good people in this cumminity, i hope it gets better, not become worse

The more I read the posts in this thread, the more I realize that trying to implement a rule like this would be impossible for the mods. Just call people on their shit and be done with it. Google makes calling people out on intentional misinformation pretty easy.
