Forums - Sony - All PS3s are backward compatible with PS2 software.

I own a 80GB PS3 Phat, it has never had any PS2 backward compatibility. The box to console even states that it does not play PS2 games.

There are two 80GB version in US... the BC compatible is the CECHExx... the CECHKxx, CECHLxx and CECHMxx are not official compatible.

Edit - The 80GB CECHExx have no hardware emulation it have software emulation... only the 60GB CECHAxx and 20GB CECHBxx had.

ethomaz is clearly on a mission though, I don't think I have the will power to correct him again :)

No... there are only two models with hardware emulation.

60GB CECHAxx and 20GB CECHBxx (sold in US only)

The 60GB CECHCxx (PAL) and 80GB CECHExx (US) have software emulation.

All the others models have no official PS2 BC.

No guys... the EU 20/60GB and US 80GB have no hardware... only software emulation... Sony only disabled that in later models but the software emulation is on firmware yet... only disable for PS2 disc use.

The PS2 classics run in this software emulation... always did... it is old.

Even in the hack community the guys enable the software emulation for PS2 before Firmware 3.55... this already happened in hacker community since 2011 (or before after the first hack happened).

This is really old news.

I'm in the US. Launch consoles 20/60GB had full hardware BC. My brother had a 60GB that unfortunately fell victim to YLOD. I bought the MGS4/Killzone 2 PS3 Bundle. That 80GB PS3 has no PS2 BC.

lol I have to put the things in order...

CECHAxx (60GB US) - Hardware PS2 BC
CECHBxx (20GB US) - Hardware PS2 BC
CECHCxx (60GB PAL) - Software PS2 BC
CECHExx (80GB US) - Software PS2 BC
CECHGxx, CECHHxx, CECHJxx (40GB ALL) - No official PS2 BC
CECHKxx, CECHLxx, CECHMxx (80GB ALL) - No official PS2 BC
CECHPxx, CECHQxx (160GB ALL) - No official PS2 BC

PS. I'm not listing the Slim or Super Slim model... only the Fat.

Sorry should have been specifc, was just relating to the quote of 60GB/80GB

The 80GB US one with full BC is the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle edition.

Of course the launch consoles were all full BC in the US (both CPU and GPU in hardware)

"Like the South Korean and European models, the North American 80 GB (2007) model also excludes the PlayStation 2 "Emotion Engine" CPU chip.[70] However, it retains the "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU.[75] Due to the elimination of the "Emotion Engine", the level of compatibility was reduced. lol stop the 80GB never had the full hardware inside... there is only a specific 80GB model with software BC (no hardware like the PAL launch).

The hardware (EE) only existed in the launch 20GB and 60GB in US.

CECHBxx (20GB US) - Hardware PS2 BC

Of course that's correct, but what's your point and what on earth does it have to do with this? I've not said anything to the contrary.

The point you don't seem to be grasping is that where you have listed "Software PS2 BC", in fact those consoles are not software based BC, the PS2 GPU is still present in those consoles and the CPU is emulated in software.

I'll say it...yet again.

PS2 Classics are emulated entirely in software and need no backward compatible PS2 hardware.

The PS2 software emu you linked to is legacy code that was never used for any purpose by Sony, and not for PS2 Classics specifically.

The emualtor running the PS2 Classics, and thus the whole point of this news has no link to BC console - not even the ones that are partially software emulated.

EE stands for emotion engine which is the CPU in the PS2, of course we know that was only in launch consoles, the GPU however is still present in those consoles.

Actually, you're right about the 80GB MGS4 bundle, my apologies for that. That's one point you are correct on and that has nothing whatsoever to do with the thread.

The main issue here is your lack of ability to gras something that everyone else on VGChartz knows (That BC consoles that are partially software based still have the PS2 GPU inside...as in the MGS4 bundle and the 60GB EU launch PS3)

The primary use of the Emotion Engine was to serve as the PlayStation 2's CPU. The first SKUs of the PlayStation 3 also featured an Emotion Engine on the motherboard to achieve backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 games. However, the second revision of the PlayStation 3 lacked a physical Emotion Engine in order to lower costs, performing all of its functions using software emulation performed by the Cell Broadband Processor, coupled with a hardware Graphics Synthesizer still present to achieve PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility. In all subsequent revisions, the Graphics Synthesizer was removed, with no software emulation to replace it.
