ethomaz said: No guys... the EU 20/60GB and US 80GB have no hardware... only software emulation... Sony only disabled that in later models but the software emulation is on firmware yet... only disable for PS2 disc use. The PS2 classics run in this software emulation... always did... it is old. Even in the hack community the guys enable the software emulation for PS2 before Firmware 3.55... this already happened in hacker community since 2011 (or before after the first hack happened). This is really old news. |
I own a 80GB PS3 Phat, it has never had any PS2 backward compatibility. The box to console even states that it does not play PS2 games.

EU 80GB PS3s have no PS2 BC (no PS2 hardware inside)
US 80GB PS3s do have PS2 BC (Have both PS2 GPU and CPU inside)
ethomaz is clearly on a mission though, I don't think I have the will power to correct him again :)

I'm in the US. Launch consoles 20/60GB had full hardware BC. My brother had a 60GB that unfortunately fell victim to YLOD. I bought the MGS4/Killzone 2 PS3 Bundle. That 80GB PS3 has no PS2 BC.

Sorry should have been specifc, was just relating to the quote of 60GB/80GB
The 80GB US one with full BC is the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle edition.
Of course the launch consoles were all full BC in the US (both CPU and GPU in hardware)
