Forums - Gaming - WiiU or Vita will sell more in 2013?

2013 Winner?

Vita 255 40.09%

WiiU 284 44.65%

About Even 55 8.65%

Dreamcast 30 4.72%

Virtual Boy 12 1.89%

Total:636

At the moment my money would be on the Wii U as people will see Nintendo's prime IPs in HD for the first time. However, it depends what is in store for Vita in the second half of the year. I wouldn't discount Sony's handheld just yet. I know a lot of people who are interested in Vita but as much as they were happy with AC3: Liberation etc. the future release schedule was just too dry for them to want to go for it. Especially at the current price.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

I also went through to see what effect the 3D Mario and Mario Kart had on the 3DS, as well as the price cut.

3D Mario:

Japan-106% increase
Europe- 62% increase
USA- 35% increase

Mario Kart:

Japan- 77% increase
Europe- 17% increase
America- 34% increase

Price cut:

Japan- 5,146% increase

Europe- 296% increase
America- 301% increase

These games (including Zelda) and price-cuts were well-introduced in order to try and turn the tables with the sales figures. Nintendo seem to be hinting towards a similar (well, identical) scenario for the Wii U, so I don't see why it can't have a similar effect.

Jeebus

misleading stat.  nintendo announced their price cut a month in advance over which the weekly sales droped from over 30k to less than 4k before spiking to 206k.  still an impressive rise at around 600% from the previous weekly average but no where near a "true" 5000% rise.

Thanks for that, totally forgot about that month with the 3DS pre-price drop.

Makes much more sense.

Let's be honest, most of the games coming out early in the year for the Wii U will barely give the hardware a bump. Titles like Bayonetta 2 and The Wonderful 101 will probably be critical successes but few people are going to buy a console for them. Likewise most of what is releasing for the Vita in the west, though after a full year the library is building up nicely.

However, the Wii U will surge over the holidays. All they need is one big Mario game. A certain segment is conditioned to buying Mario because it's the game they know and are familiar with. It's like how everyone will go to McDonalds if they have to stop in a small town, even though the locally owned burger joint might be a lot tastier. No, I'm not saying Mario is like mediocre fast food, I'm saying that comfort and familiarity sell, especially to parents picking out Christmas presents. It's an exceedingly safe choice.

ew I hate Miccy D's, but then again I hate all fast food.  Subway (which I don't count) is where I'll go or maybe sheets if I'm feeling like junk food.

Wendy's, Popeye's and Charley's (a Philly steak chain) are the only fast food places I can bear to eat at.

Still, I do see the analogy.

Wow. You guys really have no faith in the Vita if you actually believe that the Wii U is gonna outsell it this year.

Your right we don't lol. The Wii U sold more in 3 months than Vita's first 10 months or so, so yes we believe when the games come Wii U will sell more.

I have a Vita and I agree with this.

The Vita's Japanese sales are going to be doing most of the systems heavy lifting this year. Competition with the 3DS there, along with the Western market running out of fucks to give for dedicated handhelds in general, means that the Vita has far more going against it even if the price is cut globally. The rather barren software line-up doesn't help; I can only think of 3 games this entire year that I know I want to pick up for the Vita (Muramasa, Tearaway, Killzone), with another few I'm only kind of considering.

The Wii U has a much bigger groundswell of potential buyers that Nintendo can tap into come Christmastime.

I go with Vita. I just don't believe Wii U will get all those heavy hitters you talk about. Nintendo has proven to be uncapable of handling HD games and I think they just won't make it in time. I mean, when are we going to get Pikmin 3? All the games announced or hinted will come, but nobody knows when and I think they will come too late to allow Wii U to catch up to what Vita is doing right now and what will hopefully do in the future.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Wii U for sure.

Without a singe game released in 2013, Wii U kept on par with Vita for 2013 so far. Yes Vita got a price cut in Japan, and will likely get one everywhere else soon, but Wii U kept up with Vita without games, and in a couple weeks it's exclusives will start trickling in.

I mean think about it, Vita has 2, maybe 3 major exclusives, and one multiplatform game for Vita coming in 2013, all from Sony.

Dragon's Crown (Also for PS3)
Killzone Mercenaries
Soul Sacrifice
Tearaway

Wii U has 5 confirmed exclusives, 1 HD remake, and 1 multiplatform game coming, only half of which are Nintendo developed. Plus wii U could have a lot more for fall.

Bayonetta 2
Dragon Quest X
Lego City Stories
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Also for 3DS)
Pikmin 3
The Wonderful 101
Wii Fit U

and maybe

Mario Kart 8
Super Smash Bros 4

Unless a comet hits the Nintendo factory......no wait because Nintendo consoles, like Sony are made at Foxconn.

Unless an isolated fire occurs at Nintendo's factory, and this is stopped before affecting other manufacterers, Wii U will easily outsell the Vita. I would even bet Wii U sells twice as many units as Vita.

I would agree with that prediction if SSBU is confirmed for 2013, but I highly doubt it

SSB4 is not coming out 2013, we'll be lucky if it comes out holiday 2014. E3 will have Video feed, not demos. Jus saying, but MK and Mario 3D have a chance

That's why I said "and maybe."

No confirmed launch date for those, however I am reading from comments that Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Universe are confirmed for 2013. If this is true, then Wii U by a Universe.

PS Vita will double Wii U sales.

Yes, I just said that.

The Wii U will likely sell around 7 million units this year. You believe the PSV will sell 14 million, in other words have a YoY sales increase of 400% and sell the same as the 3DS did last year?

I don't see it.

No, I believe Wii U will flop very hard and sell 5 Million units at best. Sony will introduce Price Cuts worldwide for Vita along with some heavy hitters. It's all or nothing this year for Vita I believe, so Sony will pull out the big guns. On Nintendos side, I'm pretty sure many big First Party titles will be delayed until 2014. Besides, the release of the PS4 will also have a small impact. It makes the Wii U less attractive and because of all the buzz for Sony, will make people look at Vita. Maybe there will be even a bundle with PS4 and Vita, but I doubt it.
