I understand your trepidation, but I don't think it's as clear cut as all that.
Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony all have their workhorse IPs -- Halo, Uncharted, God of War, Forza, Gran Turismo, Super Mario, Pokemon, The Legend of Zelda -- and they also play host to different and interesting titles. Nintendo has added new IPs in the last two generations, and it's reinvented some of its evergreen series.
I completely understand if you're not a fan of the Nintendo franchises, but your implication that the company produces nothing new or inventive is misleading.
@OP: I think another brother or -- even better -- a sister would be perfect for the New Super Mario series. He or she could function as a playable character (sorry Toads) and maybe earn a spin-off of his/her own.
