Can anyone answer why Nintendo, in the last 8 or so years (since they started printing money with the DS and then Wii) has not invested *heavily* in the creation of studios, expanding their horizons with new IPs, courting indie developers, and building a competitive network infrastructure? What have they, exactly, done with all those billions? let them sit in the bank?

They've pretty much let the money sit in the bank.

I'm assuming it involves golden toilets and cash for toilet paper.

No seriously, all the cash from the WiiDS era vanished. The 3DS having a rough launch and struggling to get its legs outside Japan is not enough to explain it. This company has seen some major financial mismanagement, and they need to go through a restructuring that gets rid of the incompetence at the top.

By the way, for the people who think hiring is still going on like crazy for Nintendo, think again. Their projected hiring for the year is down about 50% this year compared to past. Nintendo Source (chart at the bottom show numbers for the past few years). They simply aren't in the financial position to pick up lots of new people, and that is going to affect game development.

Nintendo should work on creating new IPs... much in the flavor of what they already offer, but definitely much more transcendent in the gameplay part of things. Like Pokemon did them a lot of them favors... they need to go that direction again, discover a new genre, or even just restore/revamp some older ones without staying too generic... eh, that is hard to explain in just one paragraph.

I'm still mind boggled at the fact that they didn't greenlight a 'AAA' "epic" type of game for the Wii U launch.

Not neccessarily a sequel but something equal in scope to a Metroid/Zelda/Halo type game. That's basically what everyone is waiting for. If thier own Japanese teams were working slowly because of the transition to HD then they should've contracted one of the many excellent Western studios that have been working on HD consoles for years now.

Cafe kits started to go out 2 years ago, such a game probably would be finishing up right about now ... Nintendo is really short sighted sometimes.

That's not true. Wasn't Pachter the one who said they have like 8 billion cash?

You mean the guy who said Wii U would be flying off the shelves like Wii?

And golden toilets are still assets!

HIGHLY doubt that the $$ just "vanished".

They had to spend it on SOMETHING.

Patcher predicted nothing but doom for the Wii U.

Yeah, he pretty much said they would sell out their first shipment(s) but he didn't forsee anything good for Wii U, he actually called it Dreamcast 2.

I recall before the launch he was positive about it.
