Forums - Gaming - God of War: Ascension has the best gameplay in the series' history. UPDATE: (Omg, I finished it! 9.3/10)

I completely agree, the game play is so fluid now, and the combat system is a lot deeper than in previous games in my opinion.

Off Topi: I don't get why people read so much into reviews of games. I never see this amount of scrutiny of what a single person/site thinks about something in other forms of entertainment. Do people that read game reviews also read movie reviews? I feel a thread coming on.....

Yes, according to UnitSmiley, take Nike's advice and just do it!

I'm just a few hours in and I'm really enjoying it. I can see this being the best in regards to game play. But it doesn't look like they put any effort in the story.

Thats the main reason the game keeps getting 8's. If the story was as good as all the others it would've been a solid nine. I play God of War for gameplay to tell you the truth. I want to see what Greek mythical being I can destroy next with Kratos, but I also like his story overall. He's just a simple yet vaguely complex character because he just doesnt give up and killing cannot be his only reason for rising from the dead numerous times. Unlike most other characters he has the burning will to execute his goals and endeavors and for that he stands higher than most videogame characters. Kratos despite his bloody and ash riddled exterior is the personification of persistance and determination to reach your goals and seeing them through to the end.

Can't company's bribe major review sites to give bad reviews to the game's of their competitors? Or am I just being stupid? Because there is literally nothing I can find that makes this worse than any previous god of war game, except for the story I guess... but was the story really such a big highlight of the previous games?... someone heed my calling for answers!

No, I believe Sony got fined millions of dollars in multiple country for making fake reviews so I believe they are being careful with bribing major reviews site.

It is true that the gameplay got some tweaks and refinements, it might work out just a little smoother than in GoW 3. Best gameplay mechanics in the series so far? maybe YES. Is it more fun to play? NO,

GoW 3 had so many memorable and epic moments, Ascension never had a chance to top that. It's not even close.

It's still a great game every GoW fan will love and everybody can enjoy though.

Edit: I see how everybody praises the story of GoW. Lol, the story was always as simple as go there and kill that. The enemies, its scale and the battles they provided was what made the games epic. Every GoW raised the bar in terms of scale and powerful enemies, since Kratos got stronger. It was relatively "easy" to beat the previous games in each sequel, with GoW 3 being the ultimative battle against the olymp. How could they go wrong with that? (Not saying everybody could make GoW 3, but with SM's talent it was only natural).

Now Ascension was the exactly opposite. It was a prequel so it would be the weakest Kratos so far, he would face the less memorable enemies, because he would face the real amazing ones in the "later" games. I'm sure it was the most difficult GoW for SM to make an appealing plot with the epicness everybody expects from this brand. And they did it pretty decently, just not as good as GoW 3 and even GoW 2 imo. Because it was impossible.

Game of the year 2017 so far:

5. Resident Evil VII
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
1. Super Mario Odyssey

That I agree with. Given the limits they had since the game is a prequel they did a great job. I didn't expect it to top GOW3 with respect to some of the things you mentioned, because that is impossible to top when the next game in line is a prequel.

The story is what is deducting points I believe.

It is by far the area the game is lacking the most in which is jarring considering Todd Pappy going all "We wanted to tell a story we felt needed to be told" etc.

But having said that: The game as a whole really has a lot of elements that are the best of the series which is a remarkable achievement. One cannot ignore the Multiplayer either which I feel should in some ways make up for the story. Ofcourse it wont to SP only fans, but as a reviewer: You have to look at the overall product.

How can he be a complex character when every iteration of GOW , kratos gets fooled teh same exact way  over promise that never stands true when he competes the task asked byt he gods. I mean wouldn't kratos learned from mistakes after the first two games?  The only reason why they have been so many GOW games because Kratos is stupid gullable chracters that naked women  and tits can sway him in doign everythign which leads to him raging and killign everypne. 'personification of persistance and determination to reach your goals and seeing them through to the end." HOWS that work when he causes thes goals to happen. if he was smart enough he should have said no and not get persuaded by teh gods knwoign that thye can never keep his promise. Can't say much about ascension as i haven't finished the game yet.

@Bolded => is a bit misleading though.

The story wasn't necessarily bad its just that it was barely told to you and the amount of story was very little.

Santa Monica Studios didn't mess up the story in terms of writing.

They just didn't prioritize it enough.

It was underdeveloped and the storyTELLING was lacking ridicilously much.

It was a game that from a story perspective: Really could've not existed. That's how irrelevant it is. Atleast Ghost of Sparta added a whole lot. Ghost of Sparta was actually very rich in terms of story.
