Forums - Gaming - David Cage: look to indie developers for change

VG247

Gamespot AU’s Laura Parker recently spoke with Quantic Dream’s David Cage about just what exactly is going on in his head, and he discussed how he may not be the man to make the games industry evolve from where it is now to realizing its potential.

“The answer to the industry’s problems could very well come from the indie space,” Cage said. “I know that. Indie game development is exciting, interesting, and risky. Independent game developers are pioneers, and we’re in desperate need of pioneers. When you look at cinema, you can see the same thing; it was really the underground filmmakers that brought about the revolution and broke free of what the big studios were doing. Maybe this is what needs to happen in the games industry.”

i won't second David, because i think him and his team at QD's can lead the way, but i will agree with him in saying indie dev's are the best place to look for change in the industry.

I disagree with most of what David Cage has been saying recently but I do agree with this.

And outside of Minecraft, which works precisely because of how little narrative it has, has any indie game sold well enough to justify an industry shift?

David provides no sales evidence for his ideas, only that adding story to games makes them creatively better or something.

And speaking of film, isn't it the big studio productions that everyone saw, remembers, and makes reference to? When films are made today, the goal is to outsell or outlast those films.

Only way I can see this happening is if the big publishers (mostly Nintendo) go back to oldschool roots and make like a NES game.

Didnt Capcom make Mega Man 9 and 10 like the old ones? Not sure how well it did in terms of sales.

I cant see any publisher/developer making a big game or as big as Minecraft any time soon unless for some sort of miracle happens they do ;o.

He's specifically talking indie, that's different from retro styling. As far as I know MM9 and MM10 sold poorly anyway.

Here are his claims:

more games should employ the services of professional writers

collaboration between the games industry and Hollywood

it was really the underground filmmakers that brought about the revolution and broke free of what the big studios were doing. Maybe this is what needs to happen in the games industry.

a number of game makers he believes are bettering the industry by providing exactly the kinds of experiences he has been talking about: studios like Telltale Games, Thatgamecompany, and Minority, and game designers like Jonathan Blow.

And I ask: where is the sales evidence for THAT? The highest selling games of all time have big publishers, little story, nothing truly 'deep' and created the rules of a good game for themselves instead of taking from film.

By all means adding more cinematics, voice acting, professional writing and so on has made things worse. Look at the story complaints for SC2 vs SC1, or Mass Effect 3 vs Mass Effect 1/2.
