Didnt Capcom make Mega Man 9 and 10 like the old ones? Not sure how well it did in terms of sales. I cant see any publisher/developer making a big game or as big as Minecraft any time soon unless for some sort of miracle happens they do ;o. |
He's specifically talking indie, that's different from retro styling. As far as I know MM9 and MM10 sold poorly anyway.
Here are his claims:
more games should employ the services of professional writers
collaboration between the games industry and Hollywood
it was really the underground filmmakers that brought about the revolution and broke free of what the big studios were doing. Maybe this is what needs to happen in the games industry.
a number of game makers he believes are bettering the industry by providing exactly the kinds of experiences he has been talking about: studios like Telltale Games, Thatgamecompany, and Minority, and game designers like Jonathan Blow.
And I ask: where is the sales evidence for THAT? The highest selling games of all time have big publishers, little story, nothing truly 'deep' and created the rules of a good game for themselves instead of taking from film.
By all means adding more cinematics, voice acting, professional writing and so on has made things worse. Look at the story complaints for SC2 vs SC1, or Mass Effect 3 vs Mass Effect 1/2.
