I'm thinking that too, and even sooner. I don't have the fastest connection in town, but I can stream 1080P, and someone in another room can stream 720p, and it works fine. Plus, the new standard will make it even more efficient. (I am assuming both the X720 and PS4 will include the .h265 standard.) There were so few 720p TV's when the Xbox 360 came out. But now, everyone is 1080P (well, where I am). I think at over 40" 1080P just doesn't cut it. (I have a 52" TV, and like it much, but yea, the resolution could be better.) I could see 6' and 8' 4K TV being much of the standard living room TV of the future in a few years. But, just like the PS3 pushed out Blu-ray. I think they will use PS4 to push their 4K TV's. |
I agree, I also have a 50" plasma, resolution could definetly be higher, its really low ppi.

Let's not hate on 4k displays and technology...
Prices will come down but even now you could build a 120+ inch 4k setup using 4 1080p projectors ins a 2x2 arrangement and use a PC to split the signal in to 4.
4 projectors + a pc will get you 4k gaming and whatever little content is out there today...just imagine what we will have tomorrow.

Hate living in the second world :(
I think 4k in PS4 is not necessary, but it wouldn't be like Sony not to try to introduce a new standard of some kind. If they really hope to push 4k as a standards, they need the help of the Playstation brand, just like PS3 was the only reason Blu Ray became the standard.
Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!
My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/
My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.
100GB movies??? Really? That in itself isn't worth it.
Generation 8 Predictions so far.....(as of 9/2013)
Console that will sell most: Nintendo Wii U
Who will sell more consoles between Microsoft/SONY: SONY

That's shit bro.

Honestly though, it's not even feasible. They could do 4k through Blu-Ray though.

I'm looking forward to 4K video. 1080p is enough from 11ft away on a 52" display (real 1080p, not that garbage that passes for HD on cable) but it's pretty low with a projector. I like the immersion that sitting close or a huge screen can provide, but also the clarity of a smaller display from further away. 4K should be able to do both.
I'll wait for a disc format though. I have an 80gb download limit, not enough to download even 1 4K movie, and a heavily compressed 20gb version is kinda defeating the purpose.
To keep blu-ray quality you need 4 times the average bandwidth blu-ray uses now. 35 x 4 = 140 mbps = 123 GB for a 2 hour movie. It would be nice if we also finally get 30 bit color (deep color), another 1.25x increase. (15bpp instead of 12bpp after chroma subsampling)
4K downsampled to 1080p should look very nice too. The best 1080p you can get now is still compressed 15:1 after chroma subsampling (114:1 for 5mbps 1080p streaming) and there simply is no non chroma subsampled 1080p video available atm. (color resolution of blu-ray is 960x540) 4K downsampled to 1080p should get you a lot closer to uncompressed 1080p RGB like video.
Maybe Sony will bring out a ps4 slim in 4-5 years with a 12 speed 8 layer blu-ray drive for 4K blu-ray playback. That would be a nice upgrade (instead of removing features like this gen)
