Forums - Sony - PS4: Second-Hand Games Block Back On? Sony Says Stance 'Isn't Clarified Yet'

NowGamer

Sony's stance on second-hand games working on PlayStation 4 'isn't clarified just yet' admits Fergal Gara, Managing Director Of PlayStation UK.

The admission came during our PS4 interview with Gara, when we asked that following confirmation that second-hand games won't be blocked on PS4 [Source: EuroGamer], if Sony ever considered going down that route.

"Well first of all, we haven’t stated that second-hand games… we haven’t made a statement on the second-hand games question," answered Gara. "There was a lot of reaction to a patent that was filed, which is a matter of course for a technology business like us, to file various patents at various times, many of which many never see any application but they are good to have depending on ideas that might be building."

"So what we’re here to do is offer the best value and the best gaming experience for gamers," he continued. "The answer to the pre-owned question isn’t clarified just yet and we’re working through that and we’ll announce our position in more detail as and when we can."

So it seems that second-hand games being blocked on PlayStation 4 could very much still happen.

Of course it can - they will try to push us to buy digital which was obvious as 3rd-party is definitely demanding.

So PS4 and Nextbox are looking to block used games "to a degree".

Woah

I think this is a move by both ms and Sony to secure preferable contracts with gamestop. Gamestop's vitality rests on used game sales, and I can't see either company actually moving forward with it, and more likely, the used game "block" is more likely to take form in an 'online pass' format rather than outright blocking used games.

What with the push for digital-only and the increasing restrictions on pre-owned games, EA's codes etc., gaming is not going to be what it used to be. I'll stick with my current console setup of X360, PS3 and Wii as long as I can. Good thing the bf is a computer technician and can fix most common console faults - hopefully we'll have the consoles for a good few years.

Actually, they have made a statement.

But given all the hemming and hawing around and what they've said about third parties, I think publishers will have the option of blocking used games just like they have the option of region locking discs on the PS3.

Deal breaker.

If the PS4 block's used game's I won't be getting one.

Are they waiting for MS move?

Interesting. Wasn't there an article that said used games not blocked on ps4 confirmed?

Like I said... I don't care either way if MS and Sony do this.
