Could have also been a problem with your ps2 laser, i had to open up my ps2 a couple of times to clean the laser because i bought it at launch and it kept getting dirty over time and started to become picky about which games it ran (if at all). This gen i've probably borrowed about 20 used games from friends (sharing is caring) or brought them and all have worked perfect just like knew.

Yeah I thought about that. Laser wasn't the problem - I had the slim model. Tried several games, all worked fine. It was just that particular disc. I'm sure the risk is less with bluray discs now. I'd just prefer to wait a month to buy new at $30.

Around the Network

I think next gen used games will require a $10 activate pass
They already do this with online with A LOT of games.

It's just that simple.

If Microsoft does this, I think they'll be able to pull it off. America loves that kind of stuff.

I think they are trying to do what apple does with the Ipad, going all digital.   Basically with this they are saying screw retail.

I dont think any of the big 3 will do that. If that happens Gamestop wont sell their consoles at all, just to screw them over, just like the console developer is screwing them.

Just out of curiosity, did you buy it used from a retail store like gamestop/game or did you buy it online e.g. ebay? Pre-owned games are normally checked thoroughly before their put back on sale to ensure they work correctly if their from retail stores.

Gamestop. I'm sure they checked it and it ran at the time, but it certainly didn't run when they sold it to me.

Gamestop just takes broken discs from their 3 dollar guarantee, resurface them, and resell them.  50/50 chance they'll work.
