Forums - Sony - PS4 "FROM DEVELOPERS TO DEVELOPERS"...

"Why didn't Sony's event have any women" was gold. I was expecting some bashing for even the smallest things but not at this level.

Indeed if the developers are happy, we will be happy. PS4 will have none of the problems PS3 had, while building upon the strengths of PS4.

oh yeah lol I hope sony will get ND's Amy Henning (I'm sure I mispelled the last name) to come on stage every event from now on....if not Kaz is sexist confirmed!

Did you see the Watch dogs dev praising the system? He tells exactly why the system gives them so much freedom.

Yeah I read that. It seems making the PS4 version is actually easier than PS3 version even though they are pushing the game further.

Jack Tretton also said that games will cost the same. Everything sounds about PS4 so far. Game prices were my main concern for next gen.

cbarraso09 i get your point. Although i think a lot of the people commenting here completely missed it.

But yeah its a tough decision to make for Sony...do we satisfy devs and go balls to the wall with high end tec. Or do we release something more affordable for consumers. Well, until we get the pricing info we don't really know yet whats Sony's plan. But given the specs i dont think the console will be priced outrageously. I think we looking at prices between 400 and 500. ~400 for base model and 500 for premium model. Which is reasonable i would say. In about a year that price will get cut and probably again in the two years following that. Prices at that point might be at 300 and 400 respectively. Compare that with last gen and i think thats a MUCH better deal for consumers.

But yeah why not make a $300 console from the get go? Hmmm i dunno given sony's position and their lack of innovation when it comes to the so called "gimmicks" or new ways to play, this is their best option. Well i certainly cant think of any other approach to a new console for Sony...and it seems that the team behind ps4 couldn't either. Successful implementation of innovation is truly difficult....you cant just innovate and expect things to go well because you doing things differently. Look at the situation Nintendo find themselves in now. They in no mans land. Not appealing to the Casuals or the broader "hardcore".

Sony said screw that risk, we got a good thing going with the PS3 and the gamer centric focus. Why not satisfy devs on the hardware side and take a simple approach.

I also think sony and AMD have managed wonderful things with the tec inside of the PS4 fitting 18 GCN cores in an APU solution is amazing. And i think to a point they have innovated with the hardware. So yeah there has to be a compromise somewhere and i think sony has taken the right approach for them. I also dont think they've completely ignored the gamer...its actually quite the opposite. And again we dont know price but all signs point to a reasonable one.

Intel Core i7 3770K [3.5GHz]|MSI Big Bang Z77 Mpower|Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 2 x 4GB|MSI GeForce GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr 2|OCZ Vertex 4 128GB|Corsair HX750|Cooler Master CM 690II Advanced|

People always like to demand more and more, but aren't wiling to actually pay for it. Unfortunately the world doesn't work that way and innovation costs money. If money's the issue, there's options: buy a Wii/PS3/360. There's plenty to keep you busy there. But don't complain when companies try to push the limits to make bigger and better products for us.

It's all about the game.

Sony announced a lot for gamers;

-Every game available on PSN, instantly demo the full version of any game with the click of a button.

-The share feature, allow you to capture your most memorable moments and share them with friends, allow friends to watch your stream as you play, allow friends to take over control and help you through levels.

-Sleep mode, so you don't have to power down the console, and wait through boot up, menus, and load screens to get back to your game.

-Every console comes with the camera, and the standard dual shock has a light for tracking. Every system has this, thus developers can fully support it, equals new ways to play, new experiences not available on previous gen consoles.

-Greatly improved community features, allowing you to have more personal experiences with family and friends.

-A rebuilt controller that corrects all of the problems people had with the DS3.

-Standard hardware to keep down cost, and improve the development ecosystem. Thus allowing developers to make better games, in less time, and improve the value of your $60 purchases.

-With the Cameras microphone, and the controllers speaker every unit has the ability to communicate out of the box.

-Games will have integration with the devices your already own (tablets, phones, Vita).

This is just what they have showed so far. Basically Sony has done everything they can to make sure that the cost of the device stays low so that they can create a user base for publishers and developers. The have included all of the standard control methods in every box so developers can bring new experiences knowing every user is a potential customer.

The only thing that could even slightly be consider an issue is the lack of backwards compatibility. This means consumers have to keep their PS3 and can not trade it in towards the new console. Even that is looking to be remedied by GaiKai.

So with all of that not being enough, please I would like to here what would you do different? How would you please consumer, developers, stock holders, and create positive buzz.

where is the gamer inside that phrase?

everything on the conference was about developers, that by the way only devs behind big publishers are satisfied with what they saw.
how much will cost to a small developer to develop for that nice machine.

ok, you will say: there will be more games because big publishers will give enough money to their devs. More of the same games that we have right now, because there are no middle developers (that usually risk themselves towards new IP'S). Big publishers keep saying dev costs will remain the same, but at what cost? layoffs hitting everywhere.

it's a shame that SONY is not thinking about the gamers, meaning accessibility: reach a broader audience with a balance between price and raw power. They haven't learnt anything. PS3, and even the lower price XBOX360, did not sell well before the major price cut. It took them few years to turn profits.

how is that they have learn from their mistakes? i mean, i saw the specs and funtionality of the system, very nice; games look nice even though we are not sure if they are playable or not, except one or two of them.

But when i though about the price point, one or two things came to my mind:
1st. It's priced high because of the specs, but mostly because it needs to profit since day 1 for the 8-years struggling big company Sony.
2nd. It's priced relatively low (meaning no less that $400), but Sony will still be loosing money, drowning themselves more and more until the inevitable happens.

I don't see how can this be healthy for everyone, the gamer, the manufacturer and the developer. But again, I am not a business major, just Aerospace. But as an engineer, I have to design according to what the market, the manufacturer, the consumer and the-job-to-be-done need.

Comments please, because what I see are cloudy days ahead on the industry. And don't be selfish, because everybody needs to be satisfied at the same level. Yeap, i know that is not possible, but SONY is not even trying.

It was actually,

"by developers, for developers"

And yes, you better be grateful for it.

so you're asking why Sony didn't go more cost effective. the reason being that they put what dev's asked for inside the console instead, of doing things the Sony way. and last gen. consoles took to big a leap which resulted in the high cost of development, and the studio closers we've been experiencing.

the industry has to move forward regardless. we can't constrain it forever. if we did that, the console market would be decades behind PC which would push PC developers further away from home consoles.

as for indie developers. they'll have to take their own precocious, and be sure to put their interest, and success of their business first.

the industry needs to move forward, you guys say. if Sony keeps running faster than it can, it will fall at some point. What can be the next gen? a $800 machine just because developers want to improve graphics?

Look, I am not hating Sony, but if they keep listening to Epic games for example, we will have another video game crash, but this time a financial one. I want gamers to enjoy the games, not the latest tech. If I want that, I should be buying the $1000 Nvidia, the best liquid cooled CPU, with thunderbolt transfer rates, and others.

The video game industry became bigger than the movies industry because people like me and you coulvreach a console for a reasonable price. Even games sell better when they are priced $50 or less.

Sony hasn't tried an affordable machine with the PS3 and PS4 (i don't think those 8GB of GDDR5 can be that cheap).

Explain me why the PS1, PS2 and Wii were the consoles that sold more than 100 millions units. In my opinion they were affordable, and the quality of the games were at the same level as the last gen and some of them above them. You give developers all the tech they want so they just focus on gameplay, and what they do is put more than enough effort on graphics. There should be better graphics, but why it shoud be a big jump.

Look, if you don't push the people to its limits, they are not going to create something new. Needs make mankind.

You guys are just thinking above the surface, below that there is a big mess.

But OK, you prefer an expensive machine and mediocre supergraphics games than something that you can afford without limiting the amount of games you can get in one year. At one point you will be paying for those games that have sequel and were good, leaving the new IP's in the basement.

Shame on you, gamers. Keep looking the other way when things get ugly.
