Forums - Sony - AMD Elaborates on PS4's Custom ''Jaguar'' APU

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/APU-Jaguar-PlayStation-Kabini-Temash,21229.html

"But for the PlayStation 4, AMD leveraged the building blocks of its 2013 product "roadmap" for PCs and created a solution that incorporates the upcoming "Jaguar" CPU cores with next-generation Radeon graphics, thus delivering nearly 2 TFLOPS of compute performance. "

"As stated on Wednesday, the APU will consist of eight x64 AMD "Jaguar" cores and a next-generation Radeon GPU comprised of 18 "compute units" capable of cranking out 1.84 teraflops. This chip will be backed by 8 GB of unified GDDR5 RAM (17 GB/sec of bandwidth), a built-in HDD, USB 3.0, a Blu-ray optical drive, Gigabit Ethernet, Wireless N and more. Note that a Radeon HD 7970 is rated at 3.5 teraflops."

""AMD's "Jaguar" is the successor to "Bobcat" which powers current C- and E-Series low-power APUs. The company is expected to launch its first batch of Jaguar-based APUs during the middle of 2013, codenamed as Kabini and Temash. These 28-nm chips will have power envelopes of 15W or less, and up to four cores."

Explanation:

CPU - custom designed low power 8 core APU design. Based on the upcoming low power E and C series APUs (C-70, E-450).

GPU - Radeon 7850 has 1.76 Teraflops and 16 compute units, this apparently has 18 compute units and 1.84 Teraflops. Essentially it's a 7850 + 2 extra compute units.

My overall power rating in PC terms:
CPU - 4 out of 10 - change to 5 out of 10 after further consideration :)
GPU - 6 out of 10

so how does compare to what digital foundry wrote about?

It's exactly the same data.

I find this very interesting because it is revealing what AMD is doing for low power notebooks and APUs this year. By the looks of things they are about to blow Intels Atom in to tiny dust.

So for all the complainers out there, now you know what the PS4 will look like.

I think this is probably Sony-exclusive custom. Desktop Trinity is 800Gflops, and the mobile roadmap is only up to 4 Jaguar cores. Wish it wasn't though, they have the tech to actually beat Intel on something.

Disolitudes ratings is a bit misleading though. Its also an oversimplification of the hardware spec.

Hmmmmm... it's missing something.

Nevermind, I need to go take a shit, maybe that'll rattle my memory.

In terms of PC specs, what part is misleading?

Custom low power APU with 8 cores running at 1.6 Ghz  + 1.84 teraflop capable GPU. We don't know the bus bandwith but memory bandwith is good...

I think an Piledriver FX quad core like 4300 (4 cores at 3.8 Ghz) + overclocked 7850 represents PS4 in terms of PC specs.

Obviously there is direct level access to GPU and no Windows OS running in the background which will make PS4 run games a bit better than a similar PC would.

The fact that you make a direct comparison with normal desktop/ laptop PC's is an oversimplification of the PS4 hardware spec. You really can't do comparisons like that. This is misleading especially for people who are not clued up about PC hardware or hardware in general.

Also your rating is out of context. If the PS4 is ultimately a 10/20 PC then I would love to know what a 1/20 PC is? and what a 20/20 PC is? As a PC enthusiast myself i can guess what your implying but other poeple wont be able to. Its misleading.

In one of your other posts you also mention that this reveals what AMD is doing with low power notebooks...now im not sure if you refering to low end notebooks or literally low power notebooks but either the way...AMD will not release low power, and especially not low end notebooks with this kind of power. I thought that post was also a bit misleading as most people wont read that post in isolation of the PS4 spec.

Edit: Their will be notebooks more powerfull than the PS4 though but these will probably cost exorbitant amounts. And again wont really be comparable.
