By "sloppy" I was referring to the fact that it doesn't seem to leaverage the Wii U's graphical muscle compared to Need for Speed.

One thing we shouldn't forget is that most launch games were probably developed on work-in-progress dev kits, in a really short time and without much man power. Usually there's that one game that really shows the new console is more powerful than current hardware (Mario 64, Rogue Squadron, Soul Calibur, Kameo, etc.) just this time Nintendo decided to go with a non-effort 2D Mario game (which could've looked so much better, really).

Yeah, there hasn't been a single Wii U game so far that's been built from the ground up by a technically proficient team to be graphically intensive.
Once there is, we'll have a better idea of what the system can do.

Look at the latest Pikmin 3 video, that will be the first game to show the power of the console.

What about Pikmin 3 makes it a graphical showcase? I mean, it's a pretty game, with some very attractive character shaders and a nicely vibrant art style, but it doesn't leap out at me as being more technically advanced than Need for Speed or Trine 2, or Halo 4 / Uncharted 3.

It's more about all the stuff that'll be going on at once in the game. Pikmin uses a very dynamic camera system and there are loads of things going on off-screen as well. In the trailer you can see lots of little details like Pikmin running around in the background. The lighting is really good, there's dynamic shadows and the game will run on both the TV and gamepad at the same time in 2 player mode, so the game always has to render a whole stage at once. It's not lightyears beyond but it looks very impressive. I'm not as tech savvy as some other people here and I'd be glad for a more elaborate opinion. Maybe Tachikoma can shed some light. It's just a gut feeling - not saying it's lightyears beyond but it certainly would've made a bigger impression that any of those launch games / ports.

Haven't seen the trailer but i will say this much, if you want to see the true power of the WiiU, you'll have to wait a few years, or wait for some of the pc/ps4/720 ports - the wiiU will be behind graphically then, obviously, but will still benefit greatly from being ported from a higher quality version than it does right now - with need for speed being the obvious exception because Criterion guys are amazing, for sloppy ports they'll just 'get it running like the ps3/360' version and leave it at that - nintendo themselves arent pushing the console very hard with their first party titles right now, and while Pikmin may look lovely, i seriously doubt it's leveraging all of the consoles capabilities or power.
