Forums - Gaming - Have you ever seen another console get as much media attention as the PS4 is getting before its annoucement?

I think the Wii got more media attention -- good and bad -- than Sony's successor to PS3.

Honestly, if it wasn't for this site I wouldn't have known about February 20. Meanwhile, in 2006, I was being bombarded with news about Wii from all sides.

I don't think many people outside of our bubble are aware of Sony's press conference or the rumored specs of PS4. There's nothing really transcendent about PS4 so far, whereas Wii captured the imagination of people beyond the video game world.

Agreed, 100%. In fact, you hit it right on the head.

Hype for the PS4 conference coming up Wednesday has certainly garnered a lot of attention here on the gaming web forums, but like Veknoid said, outside of that the PS4 isn't nearly the hype machine that the Wii was in 2006 going into its E3 reveal.

The Wii had a four hour wait and record-long lines at E3 in '06. And remember, E3 attendees are the press and gamers, NOT casuals. If Sony and the PS4 can achieve this, then I'll concede to the hype level:

And what's the line like for the PS4's E3 debut?

People in this thread are comparing consoles after they were unveiled with the yet to be unveiled PS4. PS4 already exceeds the hype levels of those consoles, even pre-reveal.

Imagine the world after feb 20 lol.

Exactly. I'm surprised at how many are failing to grasp this simple fact.

i dont know but thats one heck of a "hype." If you ask me.

*whatever the F*** u guys think it nowadays.

Before launch? Absolutely. Before even being revealed? Maybe not. Although everything was exploding while Wii U info was being leaked before E3 2011, but I can blame a lot of that press on the leaks.

I'm glad atleast someone understands. They're comparing PS4 announcement with Wii's 2nd E3 show and its actual launch.

I feel the opposite. Both Wii U and PS4 seem like they should have made a lot more noise pre-reveal than they have. I do think it's cool Sony is really trying to get it known with aggressive advertising though.

1200 people are on their way to NY right now for this event, with the RUMOUR of a PS4 reveal.

What I see happening right now is Sony pulling off some expert viral marketing.

-Fake Leaks of bits and pieces of info

-Easter Eggs from devs (KZ team website posters, patent leaks, Video Game based Fragrances, Tweets, dummy websites).

-Invitations to a huge portion of media

-Baiting opposition for info, to better coordinate a sneak attack.

Every single gaming publication(and a few non) is completely abuzz about 2/20.

I can think of plenty of systems that got even more hype than this.

Nintendo 64: It was a long delayed system that promised a lot of things. This was back when 3D Mario games could sell consoles in the millions and when Wave Race 64 provided the most impressive water physics ever seen in a videogame at the time.

Dreamcast: After the blunder that was Sega Saturn, the public was fascinated because they wondered if Sega really could make a comeback. Also, the promise of online play on a console was a huge deal back then.

PlayStation 2: This was the successor to the most popular game console of all time (at the time) and Sony was promoting the PS2 as the mother of all game consoles. PS2's hype alone overshadowed the entire lifespan of the Dreamcast.

Wii: Like Sega and it's Dreamcast, the public was waiting to see if Nintendo could make a comeback of any kind. In 2004, Satoru Iwata declared that their next console would bring on a revolution. At E3 2005, Iwata showed off the console itself and how tiny it would be. He also said that Nintendo was embarking on a "blue ocean strategy", which made everyone wonder what Nintendo's next console would be all about. At TGS 2005, the Wii remote and Nunchuk were revealed as well as a teaser trailer. It was one of the oddest looking game devices ever. Before E3 2006, the Wii name was revealed At E3 2006, no other console could stand up to the Wii hype. There were new types of games with new forms of gameplay. Zelda was going to be a lunch title. A new Mario and Metroid game was there. It was one of Nintendo's finest E3's ever. Before many doubted the console, but at the same time wondered so much about it.

The PS4 hype is different. It's less about what consumers are hoping for and more about what hope it won't be. They don't want another PS3. The fact that PS4 might be a $400 is part of the reason it's getting a lot of attention.

You mean it is getting much at Gametrailers? It depends where you look, Wii got a lot of attention even before it was released, the X360 got a lot of attention aswell, at some points you could not open MTV or it was X360... X360 and X360 they were talking about.

=p It is just like they are talking only about PS4 now but that is because their is not much other news around this time of the year.

^ what he said.

He's still wrong. He's comparing a console that was already revealed and advertised to one that is rumoured to being revealed tomorrow. I thought it was pretty simple to understand. Clearly not.

I understand very well and the X360 got a lot of hype before it was revealed.... At some points their was no more music on MTV..

So, was it before the Xbox360 was revealed? Because in your earlier post you said that they were talking about the Xbox360. So, which is it?

this is very good momentum going into a console reveal. I Personally dont remember one so hyped. The closest to it would have to be the 360/PS3 reveals and their behind the curtain arms race on which would be revealed to be more powerful.
