Meanwhile, in 2006, I was being bombarded with news about Wii from all sides. I don't think many people outside of our bubble are aware of Sony's press conference or the rumored specs of PS4. There's nothing really transcendent about PS4 so far, whereas Wii captured the imagination of people beyond the video game world. |
The Wii got no Media Attention before it was announced it was all about PS3 in 2005. Nobody cared about the GameCube Successor. All the Wii hype started afterwards. Wii didnt capture the imagination of anyone because nobody knew what it was all about, like PS4 right now. So your point kind of falls apart. However..
I also disagree with the Original post the most hyped console pre announcment was the Playstation 2 by far, just the prospect of it releasing killed of a competitor. Its like Nintendo would pull out of the Console race now because the shadow of PS4 would be crushing it before it was even revealed. The PS2 reached hype levels before announcment just Apple reached afterwards (before the reveal of a product). PS4 gets a solid interest and if the rumors are anything to go by it could eventually grow to a sizeable hype in the future.
