I wouldn't say ever, but yes, post announcement it was definitely up there with the PS1 and PS2 in sales and media buzz.

Yes... the others PlayStation... it's the same hype than PS3 had.

I think you shoudl wake up by comparison :P Most I can think of is business channels and articles in the newspaper where business analyists talk about different companies. They get around to mentioning Sony with their recent quarterly postings and casually mention how there is a PS event on Feb 20 with a "rumored PS4 announcement". I dunno, sorry if the only mass media advertisments are just casual mentions. I wouldnt call gaming sites and the overhyping of its PS fan commentators "mass awareness" |
No, apparently you don't.
The Times, Eurogamer, IGN, Gamespot, Destructoid and every other news outlet i know off has been reporting about the PS4 and what it could be about or cost. Wake up and get over yourself, fast!

Somehow ppl seem to recognize the trillons of Kaz-gifs and forum-comments and forum-fanboyism as media-attention... Look at Ni No Kuni - if you only read forums you could think this game is a potential system-seller and will easily sell several millions but then you look at the actual sales... Or look at the big PSV-thread here at vgchartz ;) |
Ding ding ding!! What do we have for him, Johnny?
I haven't noticed any super amount of media coverage. Mostly because you know, Sony hasn't actually unveiled anything yet. So the gaming related media is making a big deal about it, and the Sony fans are making a big deal about it and Kaz'ifying all of their Internets, but that doesn't mean there's huge media coverage.
And some of those Sony fans in this thread seem upset that people are comparing the pre-launch Wii or Dreamcast or 360 or N64 hype to the PS4 hype that exists right now. Isn't this what the OP asked to do? It doesn't say "oh by the way you can only compare it to hype for other consoles PRE special rumored reveal events that aren't official reveals!!!!". This whole special PS meeting thing is serving the same purpose as a reveal event. The hype is there. But it's not as big as other consoles. The Wii hype by EVERYONE and the 360 hype leading up to the MTV reveal were larger imho.

Case in point... not much. PSX did not have much hype prior to launch, not in the west at least.

The first was a exeption... but I remember the PS2 and PS3 hype... the only difference is now with the PS4 we have more internet coverage (PS3 had a lot of internet coverage too).

I agree that there's a lot of internet coverage about it. But honestly, it makes little sense to me given the power of PCs against consoles.
The only thing that should make the PS4 interesting are the exclusive games to come out for it, honestly. Gaikai is interesting as a service for sure, but we already have an idea of how that will be.
Honestly, the hype around the PS4 only goes to show the ignorance of people, there is little in the upcoming PS4 that distinguishes it from any other traditional console, bar Gaikai.
The Wii, however, was revolutionary, and that was actually true.
There is media coverage around the PS4, but to me it's a lot of fuss to be completely honest and shows the nature of media coverage in our industry: poor.
| TheLastStarFighter said: Seems pretty standard. Sony fans are hyped, as you would expect. You can't really measure "hype". The coverage seems about what you would expect... it's a big deal. I wouldn't say it's more or less than PS3, PS2, XBox360 or WiiU. Wii got an exceptional amount of media coverage but it was unusual, more like i-thing coverage. Things like the Youtube vid or whatever isn't coverage or hype, it's advertising. |
So the gaming media and web publications like the LA times don't count?
What are you talking about? I didn't say it's not being covered. I said it's not more or less than other system launches. You're acting as if it's a worldwide holliday tomorrow. I don't see that. If you go to Gamespot today, it's the #4 story, and there is a banner for the conference down below like they do for all conferences, such as the big 3's E3's. On IGN it's in the #5 box after games like MG, C3 and so on. The LA times has coverage of the PS4 meeting, just like they did for the WiiU reveal. It's just a product that a company is selling. What's trending? "Downton Abby", of course.
Your love of Sony is fervent, that's obvious in all your posts. You bash other products and hype Sony ones. That's fine, but your passionate love blinds your perspective. You are excited for PS4 and see any mention of it to be confirmation that others share you passion. That's just a projection of your emotions onto others. The media coverage is the same as other reveals.
Actually, I think gaming media should be doing a better job of promoting the new consoles. This week IGN should be calling it Playstation Week and have PS4 shit plastered all over the place. A new console is a huge deal. Crisis or MG should be much smaller stories. They did the same thing with WiiU launch, when it was secondary to "GTA5" week. The new consoles are what are going to keep the industry going, and gaming media should be hyping them to no end. Otherwise, gaming media won't have a job.

So basically Nintendo deserves press and Sony doesn't. Got it.

They both deserve more press, less fuss.
