If she's called Vasquez, it makes sense, but generally, female playable character in Gears of War is a big no.

Keeping with Gears of War tradition, here's what she'd look like (NSFA -> Not Safe For Anyone) :

Signature goes here!
I don't think a female protagonist would work in Gears. As about 90% of the people that play it are guys. I do however think that we need more main female characters in video games.

Perna is being honest, so it's hard to fault him for that. The problem is the status of women in video games in general.
What an idiot. A bad-ass female character wouldn't change a thing. And I suppose a non-white main character "would be hard to justify" because he doesn't think that 'black' sells like 'strong women' don't sell. This is among the most common problems holding the industry back from moving forward. Men running things who are living in the past that think it's a man's world.
Prove me wrong. How many of you would boycott a Gears of War game that had a bad-ass female lead character?

I think you´re underestimating the number of Gears fans who wouldn´t buy such a game.
Personally, I wouldn´t mind it at all, but I think we´d see sales numbers seriously going down.
If I get the option to play a game as a female protagonist, I go for it because I feel more immersed in what the character is doing.
But I wouldn't start throwing tampons at game developers for saying they want to keep the protagonist a male. Every game tells a story, and if Gears is telling that story from a man's perspective then that's cool.
Most of the protagonists in the games I grew up playing were men, it doesn't upset me. Although it is empowering/inspiring playing something like Tomb Raider, where I start to think "God, if I worked out more I could be this awesome".
Honestly, they can keep it male.
We have plenty of developers who go the female route and make excellent games. If Gears made a female protagonist, I would be more likely to play it, because the main thing that turns me off about gears is the dudebro atmosphere.
