Forums - General - Why do the platinum games are cheaper?

Who doesn't make money on platinum games? I suppose the lower price is an effect of no fee for the manufactures (Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft). It's only 12% of the former price though. How make a 39.90$ game to a 19.90$? There is also 7% fee for marketing - maybe it's off to... Any info or ideas?

Around the Network

Platinum games are re-releases, I beleive that the producers have already broen eve at leat at this point, so re-release the game, trying to milk it to make all the money they can, so the profit margin is a lot less. So I would think its the manufacturer who gets less money

add me

It's after the game has spent a good long time selling many copies, then they make it a platinum or greatest hits game to sell more of 'em at the new price point. It's a really good idea, win-win really.

I just picked up Fight Night 3 for the 360 and I was going to get it on the PS3, but when they dropped the price cause it became part of the Platinum series, that convinced me to get the 360 version instead.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

As noted previously, 'Greatest Hits/Platinum Hits/Player's Choice' titles have already sold a significant number of copies and have made plenty of money for all those involved. These re-releases help publishers continue to make money after sales have slowed down by attracting price conscious consumers. They also help publishers fight used game sales and piracy -- two activities which they don't make any money from.

The manufacturing of most games is relatively cheap. (The exception at this point in time would be large DS games since the carts cost more than disc-based media.) Licensing fees and royalties are often linked to the MSRP of a game. So games that sell for less mean that everyone (console manufacturer, publisher, developer, retailer, etc.) is making less money on the titles. So while they make less for each unit, they hopefully make up for it in additional volume.

Edit: Here's a great chart of the expenses on a $60 game:
