It's after the game has spent a good long time selling many copies, then they make it a platinum or greatest hits game to sell more of 'em at the new price point. It's a really good idea, win-win really.
I just picked up Fight Night 3 for the 360 and I was going to get it on the PS3, but when they dropped the price cause it became part of the Platinum series, that convinced me to get the 360 version instead.
