Although lesser in volume, I have found myself liking Takahata's movies more than Miyazaki's. Lets see :

1) Grave of the Firflies : Ill go one better than Boutros and say that this is probably one of the best movies I have seen. Though utterly un-rewatchable(the second time i watched it through felt like punishing myself), the impact of your first watch-through stays with you for a long,long time.

2) Tonari no Totoro : First Ghibli movie i ever saw, and my go-to movie for cheering myself up.

3) My neighbour the Yamadas : A film I felt was almost tailor-made for me, as a person curious about Japanese culture and also a fan of Calvin and Hobbes. If you can deal with the lack of a cohesive plot, this is an awesome watch.

1. Princess Mononoke: The plot, the writing, the heroes, the villains, just an amazing movie.
2. Grave of the fireflies: A very sad but beautiful one, god how I cried.
3. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind: I really liked the heroine, the hero is also good, but Nausicaa is truly a well written character.

I feel that I also have to include Ponyo, Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Porco Rosso.

I'm surprised at how many people don't have Ponyo in their Top 3. I thought it was quite a great movie, it was very interesting to watch for sure.

Nausicaa too but that's not Ghibli. If we are talking about Miyazaki then remove Fireflies and add Nausicaa.

That makes me feel jealousy, pure jealousy!

Nausicaä isn't technically Ghibli though..

Uh .. I know I said I wasn't much for anime goods but I have two Totoro plushies (big one and small one), a Catbus plushie (small one that purrs), and two Jiji plushies (medium sized and a small purring).  Also have two Totoro figurines; one with tiny Totoros peering out of an acorn, and one with Mei sleeping on Totoro's tummy.  They were all gifts!  I swear on Totoro's honor, they were all gifts.  I think.

Seriously, if people know you like something, they'll flood you with stuff for the rest of your life.
