With all the rumors about next-gen consoles on the raise most everyone is assuming that the Wii U system is next-gen. These are just assumptions made by a vast majority of players and not precisely the facts about what’s going on. The Wii released to compete with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Sales say the console stood well against its competitors but some gamers beg to differ. Most hardcore players admit to their old Wii console collecting dust and this is something Nintendo is fully aware of. To fix what they have broken they released the Wii U.

The Wii U is a great system, it competes well with Xbox 360 and PS3; that’s the problem… the Wii U competes with current- gen consoles and all the talk is about next-gen consoles.

The recent news about one of Nintendo’s exclusive game, Rayman Legends moving to both the Xbox 360 and PS3 is actually a real eye opener to which console the Wii U is in competition with. This is a game that was set up to be a ‘next-gen’ title but it is now being released for both a next- gen console as well as current-gen consoles. Don’t take this wrong as there are plenty of games that have released on the Wii U, Xbox 360 and PS3 but these weren’t specifically crafted for a next-gen console.

The life span of both the Xbox 360 and PS3 were said to be ten years back when the consoles were released, the Wii was never as long. It can be assumed that there is a possibility that we will be seeing another console from Nintendo within the next 5 years to compete with the next-gen Xbox and PS4. Of course, this is just an assumption but wouldn’t it be a smarter move for Nintendo to be releasing consoles farther apart from their competitors so that the competition between them and the others wouldn’t be as severe? The simple truth is that the Wii U might not hold up against what’s is coming with Microsoft and Sony so making consoles release more frequently might not me a bad idea as it would draw less attention to them against others.

Think about it, Nintendo is used to making sub-devices. This can be seen with the release of the DS hand-held systems. There’s a DS, DSi, DS Light, DS XL then we have the 3DS and the 3DS XL. Now we have the Wii and Wii U… there are huge differences between the GameBoy Advanced and the DS and there are huge differences between the GameCube and Wii but are there really that dramatic of difference besides an upgraded experience between the Wii and Wii U?
