Would I get confused in the story if I just started with fire emblem awakening? Does it even have a good story? All I know is that the combat is very fun, but I was wondering about the story and the characters.

No, you shouldn't be confused by the story, they do a good job making each game stand out on its own from past games. They also added a beginner's mode where you won't permanently lose characters if they are killed in combat. I'd say it would be a good game to try out if you have never played a Fire Emblem game before.

Pretty sure you could play FE just because of Brawl and still like it a lot.

Yeah go play it. It's fun. Check out the shop demo. The stories usually never link. You just need to know the basic idea of the series.

I received FE:A since Wednesday last week and I already completed it! It's thoroughly enjoyable, addicting and this was also my first Fire Emblem game. I don't regret it, it was worth every penny :)
