The Gamecube had no Super Mario Bros., no real Donkey Kong game, a Zelda that was disliked by many due to its art style (Twilight Princess rectified this issue, though it arrived way too late) and a 3D Mario that was disliked by many due to being too different from previous Mario games.

Additionally, the Gamecube had none of those Wii titles which the Wii U will have.

I'd be perfectly fine with a console that only plays games. That's the main reason you buy a console after all, everything else is just extra.

This. If you want a console just for games, well, that's your choice not to use any other features the console comes with. Other people, myself included, like more options. Nothing wrong with choice and variety IMO.

Those poor souls...

 

The funny thing is that despite Nintendo's IP experimentations (I loved Sunshine and Wind Waker, but the masses didn't) and the lack of Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong, the Gamecube still pulled through. So, when it comes to this topic, the Gamecube certainly doesn't suggest that a purely gaming based console released today is doomed to fail.

Oh wow, a fellow CR user. I liked the app on my 360, but haven't downloaded it on my PS3. I imagine they are the same.

Maybe its just me, but I don't think the video quality is as good when I'm just watching it on my 360 as opposed to when I hook up my laptop to my TV directly through HDMI and watching at 1080p. But maybe that's just me, or some placebo effect.
