I always see people complaining about money all the time and than go buy expensive concert or sport event tickets for multiple hundreds of dollars.

More specifically for consoles. I'd at least want the console to do good enough so it doesn't go under like Dreamcast. It doesn't have to be first but a relatively good install base will insure good first and third party support. In some cases when you are last you get end up getting better value like PS plus. Sony would not have done it if they were leading like PS2 days.

Because more success for Sony (for example) = the more things Sony can provide for the consumer. If you're not selling well, you're not going to be able to afford some of the luxuries such as PS+.

The more successful it is the better the games get, game companies are willing to take bigger chances on a console with a lot of sales then one with not a lot of sales.

That and everyone wants their favorite console to do better then the rest.

I don't think it's "Mostly Sony people", but on topic, there are a few reasons:

1) The good reason - we want our console to be viable in the long term, to maintain support from develops with new game releases, and so on.  The bigger the install base, the more developer support.  Consoles that don't sell very many units will see the flow of new games dry up quickly, making the console we bought useless.

2) The fun reason - we made some sort of a bet about how many units a console will sell, and we want to see if our predictions are right.

3) The sad but most common reason - For some who could only buy one console, it wasn't perhaps the easiest decision. Some choose to favour one console over others.  People want to be validated in that decision.  One way of that validation is their console of choice selling the most - it's a form of approval from others.  It's a self confidence thing.

4) The funniest reason - some people don't actually care at all, they just play the role to troll the people in group #3.

I like the 4th reason.

I disagree with your "mostly sony people" shot.  It's mostly Sony people who want to talk about sales now, sure, but it was Microsoft people in the past.  Don't think one user base is that different from another, they're basically made up of the same kind of people.  Whichever is perceived to be in the best position is the one where its fans talk the most and the loudest.

It's mostly pride. Nobody wants to admit that they bought a console from a company that lost the race.

At least you read the OP some people seem to think I'm talking about the developers when I'm reffering to the consumer. I know devs and publishers care about sales (why wouldn't they?) but consumers I don't get.

because every week we all get together when sales are updated to see how well consoles are selling around the world, some people prefere one console to another, its like the blue team and red team at sports day and the fun competitive trolling side of it, my team (console) is better than yours our team has more points (sale)
