If I had a dollar for every time I've heard the Rape of Nanking mentioned on this forum since I joined I could get that possessed arm finally amputated.

And after the war, these soldiers had no remorse. I remember reading about a japanese lady who in the 1950s remembers overhearing in a bar a couple of former japanese soldiers bragging about killing chinese in Nanjing and how far they could stick their arm inside a woman's genitals. Unbelievable.
Even Nazis themselves were appalled by the violence. There were a few Nazi officials residing in the diplomatic safe zone in Nanjing who witnessed what happened and chronicled it. The Chinese population did nothing to provoke those japanese soldiers. Why was there so much hate against the chinese? It's not like how someone would hurt your wife or family member, and you want revenge. No, these civilians did nothing to the japanese soldiers.
So my question is: what is the nature of human cruelty? Are we naturally evil? Is it proof that we evolved from animals? Because believe me, in war zones, humans, especially the males, can damn sure act like animals. It's still happening in this world today in war zones, and I think it's utterly disgusting.

They wanted to feel like gods. By commiting these horrific acts, they experienced a sense of standing above laws and morality. They wanted to do it simply because they could, and wanted to know how it felt.
And when everything was said and done, chances are they regretted the fuck out of it afterwards when they had lost their power.

I haven't heard it mentioned once in the years that I've been on this forum.
Of course I don't hang around the general sub-forum that much, so maybe that could be it....
I'd say we're nothing more then animals but that would be an insult to animals.

100 000 years ago humanity was a space faring race that posed a threat to Forerunner dominance. At a certain point, the Flood entered the Human controlled part of the galaxy. After a long and costly war, humanity not only beat back the flood, but cured it.
In their desperation for new worlds, uninfected worlds to settle, they started to expand into Foresunner territory. Also, Flood was silently infecting outer Foresunner worlds, and humanity was forced to cleanse them. Forerunners saw this as a act of agression and waged war on a weakened humanity.
After humanity was literally beaten back to the stone age, stripped of their technology and knowledge, the Librarian altered our genetics, thus splitting humanity into the many different races we know today.
Also, to ensure we wouldn't rise up as a unified humanity, she implanted a "geas" (genetic orders) to be distrustful of other humans, even violent towards each other. This is so that humanity would take longer and have a harder time to get back to their powerful, unified state 100 000 years ago. Basically, to prevent humanity from realizing its full potential once again, Forerunners made it so that humans will always rebel against each other.

So this is actually a post about the Rape of Nanking? The title is a bit misleading.
The only reason the Rape of Nanking is so alarming to people is that it happened fairly recently, and with a culture "civilized" enough that it scares us. Atrocities like this continue to happen in Africa even today but it's a lot more dismissable because we don't think of those places as reflecting on the civilized world. They don't worry us the same way subconsciously.
If you go back into history, the events at Nanking are nothing special. The Chinese themselves have done far, far worse, and to their own people. They have an incredibly long history of massacres and torture. Isn't Chairman Mao credited with tens of millions of deaths, including mass starvation and torture? There were Emperors who had zero regard for human life.
History is full of cruelty, but it just doesn't bother people the same way. I think it makes people worry about themselves and their own society when something like this is done by people they consider closer to their own level of civilization. They feel more ashamed of their own species than if it's done by some backwater dictator in a country they can't pronounce.
As far as human cruelty itself, there are different reasons, but it's usually related to power somehow. It's a way to reinforce power, both to the one in control and to those suffering. It's a way to feel superior and to push the other parties into an inferior level, to dehumanize them. Cruelty also has a long history of being used as a psychological weapon, to terrify enemies. Some people will do anything for power.
