Sony returns to black in Q3 on asset, product sales

 

Feb 7 (Reuters) - Sony Corp posted a third-quarter operating profit after a loss a year ago, supported by lower costs and proceeds from asset sales that are helping it offset weak demand for its TVs and other devices.

 

In the three months to Dec. 31, Sony posted a 46.4 billion yen ($496 million) operating profit, compared with a 91.7 billion yen loss a year ago. The result was below the average 72.1 billion yen profit estimated by six analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Following a 67 billion yen loss in the previous business year, Sony stuck to its full year operating profit forecast of 130 billion yen, compared with a consensus estimate of 119 billion yen of 19 analysts.

Since the start of the year Sony's shares have gained nearly 60 percent, rebounding from 30-year lows, compared with a 9 percent rise in the benchmark Nikkei 225.

With that said I guess 6.2 PS3 and .6 PS2 personally. Bringing shipped to around 74.2m (Not even close to 77m). PS2 could be bigger still Vita and PSP probably had similar numbers. Or PS2 shipments all year is a lot lower, though not likely. Even with 6.2 PS3 that would be 2.6m on shelves (higher then 360) so could go either way.

Operating profit of over 490 million this quarter, I don't see the net profit unfortunately judging by the reports. Nonetheless, it seems Nintendo posted better results this quarter than Sony... surprising really.

Not impressed with 6.8 PS3 + PS2. I expected PS3 to do that alone and we dont even know the percentage of PS2 in the 6.8.

It's really bad actually. I'm surprised by these numbers and it's one of their strongest pillars.

Last year ps2 shipped .9. The entire last year showed declines in Ps2 numbers so I would think the ps3 in at 6mil this quarter and from my estimates 75mil total. I told everyone Ps3 was closer than VGC showed and that's why Sony announced their figures in November.

Didn't the PS2 get discontinued recently? I would be surprised if it even managed .4
